Old Maps?.....

Post by Jo G » Thu Aug 17, 2006 1:19 pm

Does anyone know if there used to be a Braid STREET in Edinburgh? I can't trace it and am now wondering if its name was changed. I'm assuming it would have been around Morningside or South of Morningside Clock.

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Hi Jo

On www.Multimap.com , if you put in Braidhills and then zoom in, you will find near Braidhills, a Braid Road which leads from Fairmilehead to Morningside.

Nearer to Morningside there is a Braid Crescent and a Braid Avenue. Couldn't see a Braid Street though.Sorry.

Best wishes

Hi Catriona

Thanks for checking - I know about these roads but it's definitely Braid Street I'm looking for. I guessed it would probably be in the same area but I'm not sure how to go about finding out about street names that have been changed over the years.

Thanks

Jo

Hi Jo,

You may be able to locate it on these old maps of Edinburgh.

Thanks for the link Frances - I've had a good rummage but can't see Braid Street. Perhaps it was an error on the certificate. I'm sure the link will be useful in the future though :D

Hi Jo,
Not too guid on Auld Reekie, but I have a couple of old street maps.
There was a Braid Place near Grange Road and Rosehall Terr? in the late 19th century.
In the St Cuthberts Area.
Let me know the date you are looking at, and I'll see if I can find out anything.

Braid Place still exists - it is a side road running between Causewayside and Sciennes.

I lived my first 26 years in the vicinity of Braid Road, Braid Crescent and Braid Avenue. Braid Place (a couple of miles away) was re-named Sciennes House Place in the mid-1960s (a time when a number of streets in the were re-named to prevent confusion with similarly named streets in other areas).

I know of no Braid Street. There is Bread Street. What document did you find Braid Street on? Are there any other clues such as a parish or area?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi
I just found this
Braid Hills Hotel (Edinburgh) 4 star Hotel
134 Braid Street, Edinburgh EH10 6SD
Tel No ; +44 (0) 131 447 8888

The postcode puts it on Caiystane Ave nr Fairmile Ave off Oxgangs Rd at Fairmilehead.

Must admit it doesn't show Braid St on the map though. Maybe a phone call to the hotel could clarify.
www.Old-maps.co.uk shows in 1855 what appear to be the main roads, Comiston House and a Roman site in this area.
I'm a Cousin - are you? http://www/LostCousins.com

Looking for Beck and Trotter in Hawick and
Roxburghshire

Hi Trotterbeck,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

Wherever you found that is mistaken. The Braid Hills Hotel is at 134 Braid Road (I've been to functions there on numerous occasions).
