Anybody out there researching Cleghorns, of possibly Lanarkshire or Peebleshire. Trying to find the parents of Janet Cleghorn, born circa 1774, died 4/5/1823 and is buried at Walston Churchyard with her husband Thomas Lamb. shoemaker.
Children - Alexander Lamb born 1794 Walston.
James Lamb born 1787 Walston.
John Lamb born 1791 Walston.
Janet Lamb born 1798. (my direct ancestor who married James McMorran)
Have found Cleghorns in the surrounding areas but can't make a connection to mine. There are Cleghorns buried at Dolphinton. Any help appreciated.

Hi Grace
Have you got any further with this? Its not so easy once you are back in the 1700s. Have you had a look on the IGI for the births of any likely contenders? Do you know where/when the marriage to Thomas took place?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi there Lesley,
Unfortunately I don't have a marriage certificate for Thomas Lamb and Janet Cleghorn, but as their first child was born 1787 it must have been just before this. Thomas Lamb was born in Lanark 1761, parents possibly John Lamb and Agnes Aitken. Of course the name of Janet may not have been the name she was christened with, I suppose it could have been Jane??? They were both dead by 1855 as there are no records after that date for either, and there is always the chance that the age of 49 on Janets gravestone may not be correct. There is also the scenario that they never actually married, anythings possible that far back!!!! I also could not find any death certificates for Alexander, James and John, could be they died young. Looks like another of those brick walls to try and knock down! Thanks for your interest anyway.

hi Grace
Not so easy when they don't even hang aroud for the 1841 census! Only thing I can think of is a good rummage about in OPRs for the Walston area to see if any clues are there e.g. where they lived.
Kirk session at NAS:
RefNo CH2/363
Repository National Archives of Scotland
Title Walston Kirk Session
Date 1703-1955
As regards your Aitken connection there is this at NAS which may link up somewhere (or might not!):
GD1/105/1 Disposition by James Aitken, portioner of Elsrickle, to Andrew Aitken, his brother, of all lands & heritages belonging to him at the time of his death and particularly his room and lands in the west third of Elsrickle, and teinds thereof, and four ridges of croft land, commonly called Coldwall's Land and house and yard belonging thereto, all in the parish of Walston and sheriffdom of Lanark. 22 Jan 1803
Best wishes

CLEGHORN
Hi Lesley,
Well many thanks for that bit of advice and also the information on the Aitkens, that may have a connection to mine, but the Aitkens are another of those I have still to get to grips with, although Carnwath and Lanark Aitkens seem to be connected to my lines, at least I think they are!!!! Of course if all us budding genealogists were content in stopping at about 1800 things would be a lot simpler, its this obsession with getting further back in time that brings the problems. Any way thanks Lesley.
