Mystery of Cornelius Hodgcase & Janet Stewart.....

I like this forum. It seems to have some very knowledgeable people. So let me try my real problem. Let's take a look at the next three generations back from my previous posts. There appear to be at least 3 original Hotchkiss lines in Scotland. You can see this on my site at:

1. Edward from the first link is my line which arrived in Larbert, Airth and later Bothkennar, from Madeley, Shropshire, England.
2. The second seems to be from a totally separate line which arrived in Airth from Madeley, Shropshire, England.
3. The third link shows another very interesting line arriving in Edinburgh from Sidbury, Shropshire, England.

Before that there are Hodges and Hoggs, with no apparent relationship.

Now this is the first true mystery generation for the Hotchkiss family. This is when my line of the Hotchkiss family first appeared in Scotland. They appear to have arrived as coal miners. I believe I have traced them back to Madeley, Shopshire, England. This makes sense, since from all I have found, the English at the time were trying to improve the mines in the Carron area and Madeley was also a major coal mining area.

My evidence is just a little flimsy. A group of Hotchkiss people seem to have appeared about 1750 or so, in Airth. The minister there initially listed them under the name Hodgecase, but succeeding ministers named them as Hotchkiss, and it becomes obvious that Hodgecase was just a misspelling.

One of these Airth Hodgecase/Hotchkiss records was in 1773 for one Emmanual Hodgecase of the second line above. Emmanual doesn't appear to have stayed for long in the area, although it does appear that he may have left a son behind.

The first actual Hodgecase/Hotchkiss record in the area was in 1768 for a Cornelius Hodgecase and Janet Stewart who had a daughter Helen in Larbert, and then a son, Richard, in Airth in 1782. Soon after that there are references to Helen, Edward (my ancester), Cornelius, John, Michael, and Richard having children.

These folks seemed to appear out of nowhere in Scotland, but careful checking of the records shows that all of these names were shown as belonging to earlier Hotchkiss births, mostly in one family, in Madeley, Shropshire, England. The names Cornelius and Emmanuel were so rare, as Hotchkiss names, that this may be enough evidence of the link all by itself. Both of these names show no place else within possible time limits. I traced both back several more generations without finding a relationship between them, so I will guess they may have been distantly related. Cornelius had three brothers John, Edward, and Michael, who along with him are not mentioned again in Madeley after their births. These same names appear in Shropshire along with Cornelius. For a long time I thought they were actually the same people as well, but eventually I found enough evidence to convince me that the Madeley trio would have been too old to be the same as the ones in Caronshore. This leaves me thinking that most likely Cornelius may have reused his brother's names for his own children, or perhaps they may be nephews. Regardless, it very much appears that they were all part of the same family.

I have never been able to find a marriage record for Cornelius and Janet, or discover which Janet Stewart she was, or where Janet was from, or find birth records for the remaining four children (Edward, Cornelius, John, and Michael) if they weren't actually from the earlier Madeley generation.

Putting this together was useful, as I found that I had missed one child on my website for Richard and Jean. I hadn't included the children for Hugh and Janet. You can see this family there at http://www.hotchkissclan.org/gen/Record ... /II93.html.

They are a little hard to find, because there were no standard spellings, and most people couldn't even write their own names and had to depend on others to be their scribes. However, they are definitely there. Richard Hotchkiss and Jean McDougal, by whatever spelling, were one of the most prolific couples I have on file. You will note that Dougal and McDougal were used interchangably, and that Jane, Jean, and Janet were used basically interchangeably at that time. You can also see a good selection of the variety of spellings for Hotchkiss at the time.

I replied to you on another post about the Hotchkiss line. Daniel Hotchkiss who married Jessie Thomson Henderson was my great great great grandfather. I only began the search back on my maternal line at the beginning of this year, so have not done too much as yet. Here's some of what I found. (By the way I do think that since Cornelius is such an unusual name, there is very likely to be a connection). I have not got back beyond Daniel as yet ....

While I was searching, I came across several families around the Bothkennar, Larbert and Falkirk areas.

Edward Hotchkiss married 27/10/1849 Bothkennar to Frances Ure. Their children that I know of were Edward b 4/1/1856, Sarah b 31/3/1858, Andrew b 16/9/1859.

George Hotchkiss married Mary Corbett 17/3/1864 Falkirk. They had one son that I found - Cornelius b 13/10/1864.

Edward Hotchkiss who married Margaret Penman 20/8/1855 Bothkennar. Their children:- Edward b 10/2/1867; William b10/10/1860; Rebecca 3/2/1863; Ann b 17/10/1856; Margaret b 23/4/1865 abd Cornelius b 4/3/1858.

Their son Hugh Sharp married Margaret Glegg they had a daughter
Jessie Sharp who was my Great Grandmother. They lived at Bainsford Falkirk
