Missing GGGPs.....

Post by Graeme Blair » Wed Aug 23, 2006 8:52 am

A New Member and Needs your Help.
Iam looking for the PARENTS of my Great Grand Parents, Hugh Blair born
3 July 1831 at Ayr, Scotland, Died 5 Sept 1887 in Tasmania, Australia.
Married Mary Morrison on 28 March 1856 at Kirkoswald, Ayr, Scotland.
I believe they had a son John Blair born about 1853, and born before they
were married in scotland, Died 2 May 1894 in Tasmania, Australia, They
had 6 other Children born in Tasmania, Australia. I have their records.
The problem is search records show that John Blair and Mary McCulloch
married on 28 December 1770 at Port of Monteith, Perth, Scotland.
Mary McCulloch was born about 10 January 1747 at Port of Monteith, Perth, Scotland.
This would mean that Mary McCulloch would be 84 years old when she
had Hugh Blair, and if they are the real parents of Hugh Blair.

In 1851 there are only two possible Hugh Blairs in Ayrshire, the Colmonell one being most likely (99.9%)

at the house:

Mary Head widow 46 born Wigton
James son 25 Ayr Colmonell
Hugh son 19 Ayr Dalrymple
Mary daughter 17 Ayr Girvan
Elizabeth Logan daughter 7 Ayr Colmonell

The daughter, Mary ties in with this:

MARY BLAIR
Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
15 JAN 1834 Girvan, Ayr, Scotland
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: JOHN BLAIR
Mother: MARY MCCULLOCH

On the marriage cert it says that Hugh's mother was dead, I have my doubts.

Mary Blair maiden name McCulloch died in Colmonell in 1882 age 81

In 1881 there is:

Dwelling: Burnside Cottage
Census Place: Colmonell, Ayr, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203593 GRO Ref Volume 582-1 EnumDist 2 Page 5
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Mary BLAIR W 80 F Inch, Wigtown, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Housekeeper
James BLAIR U 56 M Colmonell, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Ag Lab
Margaret BLAIR 7 F Colmonell, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Border
Occ: Scholar

In Colmonell in 1841 there is:

Mary Blair 35 not born in county
Agnes 15 born Ayr
Hugh 6 born Ayr
Mary 4 born Ayr
William Agnew 1 born Ayr

Hugh and Mary Morrison had at least four children in Scotland:

1. JAMES BLAIR - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 29 JUN 1858 Maybole, Ayr, Scotland
2. ELIZABETH BLAIR - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 20 JUN 1856 Maybole, Ayr, Scotland
3. ANDREW BLAIR - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 24 MAY 1860 Colmonell, Ayr, Scotland

and John who appears in the 1861 census (unless he was Mary Morrisons from an earlier relationship)

Luckily Hugh and Mary Morrison are in Colmonell in 1861 living right next door to James Blair 36 unmarried and his mother, Mary 56 born Wigton.

The Death cert of Mary (McCulloch) Blair leads nicely to this:

MARY MCCULLOCK
Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
08 APR 1801 New Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: JAMES MCCULLOCK Family
Mother: AGNESS STEVEN

Some of the Ayrshire Monumental Inscription sites may have an entry for John Blair who must have died between 1834 and 1841

The John Blair and Mary McCulloch from Port of Monteith, Perth are obviously a different couple who happen to be namesakes.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.
