Morrison DNA Project .....

Post by Andy » Tue Aug 29, 2006 12:22 pm

Hi y'all,

I've just come across the Morrison DNA Project, two branches are related.

Brothers Patrick Joseph and Alexander L were supposedly born in Glasgow but have positive links to Rathlin Island and Greenock Morrisons. They later moved to Cook County, Illinois.

Patrick Joseph married in Illinois and reportedly produced the following Children: Frances, Alice, Alexander, Harold

I have found the family in 1880 but it says that Frances' father was born in Illinois while all the other childrens' father was born in Ireland, not Scotland.

If anyone has access I'd like to track down the family in 1870 and 1860 just to see if Patrick J and Alexander L had any other family that moved with them.

Here's the family in 1880 in Chicago:

Patrick MORRISON Self M Male W 50 IRE Chairmaker IRE SCO
Mary MORRISON Wife M Female W 40 ENG Keeping House ENG ENG
Francis MORRISON Dau S Female W 22 IL Seamstress IL ENG
Alice MORRISON Dau S Female W 20 IL Seamstress IRE ENG
Alexander MORRISON Son S Male W 17 IL Finisher IRE ENG
Harry MORRISON Son S Male W 14 IL At School IRE ENG

Hello Andy,
Here they are in 1870, only this time Patrick was Peter (just another instance of those names being interchangeable!)

13th Ward, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois
Morrison Peter 35 Chair Maker, Ireland
-- Mary 31 Keeping House, England
-- Frances M. 12 at School, Illinois
-- Alice 10 at School, Illinois
-- Alexander 7 at School, Illinois
-- Harry 4 at Home, Illinois
Parker Mary 67 Keeping House, Ireland

Could Mary Parker be his mother-in-law?

Here is Patrick in 1860 in Chicago also:

Patrick Morrison 25 Chair Maker, Ireland
Mary -- 22 Wife, Ireland
Frances M. -- 2, Illinois
Mary Clarivol 27, Servant, Ireland
Isabell -- 5, Illinois
Chas -- 9/12 Illinois
Alice Morrison 3/12 Illinois

Ever hear of the Clarivols before?

Do you have any information on Alexander to help narrow down which one he might be? e.g. birth date, wife & children's names... For example, there is this one in 1870 Flagg Township, Ogle County, Illinois:

Alexander Morrison 36 Grain Buyer, born in Scotland
-- Ellen 26 Keeping House, New York
--Mary 4, Illinois
--Flora 2, Illinois
--Alexander 1, Illinois

All the best,
Sarah

EXCELLENT!

Thanks for that.

Wish I could justify renewing my Ancestry membership but with only one or two now-and-again, I can't.

I don't have any further details on Alexander L. yet, but have requested that the Morrison DNA webmaster forward my details to the family who got the profiles done, hopefully they'll get it touch.

Morrison DNA

Post by Andy » Sat Nov 01, 2008 12:37 pm

The folk who provided the samples never got in contact, pity since another sample has been tested for a Morrison who was supposedly born in Ayrshire around 1771-ish

All these groups have identical 24 point markers which means they are fairly closely related.

On investigating further I'm positive that this Morrison is the son of Rathlin Gilbert Morrison (although they were probably from Scotland originally).

I managed to track down an ancestor from the "Ayrshire" branch but she's not bothered to contact me either. I have literally hundreds of rellies for these folk, you wonder why they take a DNA test when they don't seem interested in finding matches.
