Robert McAllister's relatives - Brickwall - Help please?....

Post by Jockbird » Tue Aug 29, 2006 10:14 pm

Hello,

I need some help please.

My Gx4 Grandfather is Robert McAllister, Music Teacher, who, according to his census returns of 1851, 1861, 1881 & 1891 (don't know why I've not bought 1871 yet :? ), was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, somewhere around 1820 - 1823, depending on what document you look at.

In 1851 Robert is found at 9 McFarlane Street, Glasgow with his mother & head of the family, Isabella McIntosh McAllister, age 54, his sister Agnes McAllister Kerr, an Isabella McAllister, 16, who is described as grand-daughter.

(this document is awaiting posting on the deciphering board for his mother's place of birth) - Gallery URL added - AndrewP

Robert's death certificate, dated 2nd January 1896, gives his age as 76 and his parents names as William McAllister, Ropespinner and Margaret Isabella MacKintosh, both deceased but it looks like William had passed away by 1851 was wifey was a widow by then.

Robert & his wife Isabella Paterson Wilson had 11 children, Margaret Isabella, Mary Donaldson, Agnes Kerr, William, Robina, Isabella, Florence, Evelyne, Robert, Adam and Alexander.

In 1881 they had a grandson Frederick G. McK Gilmour, thrown in to boot and were living in West Nile Street where the Amalfi Pizzeria is now! Sorry I digress......but next time I'm home I'm going there for tea, can pretend I'm in their dining room!

What I'd really like some help with is his parents, I've not found them on a OPR but then again goodness only knows what his mum was calling herself that day.

And I'd dearly love to know who this grand-daughter belongs to as she is using the surname McAllister.....is there another sibling....not that I've found........but the words haystack and needle spring to mind.

Any help, pointers, any of you related to them and can help :?: ......there were lots there...would be brilliant.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Donna

Hi Donna,

The most I can make of the mother's birthplace is Rossshire, ___castle.
Probably begins with an R, comparing it with the R in Robert.

All the best,

Jean, if it hadn't been for the fact Andrew's managed to see it I'd have said it was me....I was almost getting my wee boy who's 6 in to give me a hand.

Following on from your bit Andrew, I'm just wondering if it is Redcastle, Killearnan, Rosshire? My other side have a few bods hailing from Killearnan, didn't expect it on this, they've barely it north of the Clyde before now.....Dalmuir & Bearsden was the furthest north we got!

Now to find out what the blazes she was calling herself

Thank you both
Donna

Should be there this time. (oops - my fault).

Having done a bit of Googling in the meantime, I reckon the place is Rossshire, Redcastle. It seems to be a village with a derelict castle of the same name just north of the Beauly Firth, a few miles east(ish) of Beauly. Yes, you have it correct in Killearnan parish.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi John & Andrew,

Thanks for that confirmation.

I've had a wee Google myself then onto the IGI where I did find a Margaret Isabella Mackintosh born in 1801 in Tain, Rossshire but that's a fair wee distance away from Redcastle.....once I found it on a map!

Now to find out the rest....the quest goes on.......but not tonight perhaps.....

Thanks again to you
Donna

Sounds like a good idea!
I just discovered last week that the house of one of my lot, a Free Church Meenister, now has the venue, "King Tut's Wah Wah Hut" in the basement!!

Lost for words... as I feel quite sure he would be!
Think I'll give the next gig a miss though!

Best wishes

Isabella McAllister

Post by Jack » Wed Aug 30, 2006 11:16 pm

Hi Donna,
It would seem there's a chance that (Margaret) Isabella MacKINTOSH was already a widow by 1841.
Sorry no more details on the censuses.
--
1841 census 644-1 Ed 53 p 15 (St James)
Isabella McALISTER, 40
Agnes McALISTER, 20
Robert McALISTER, 20
Agnes REID, 20 [possibly with the family]
--
This looks like the 16yr old gr-daur Isabella McALLISTER from 1851.
As she's still alive in 1861 hopefully her DC can be found in the Statutory Records.
--
1861 census 644-2 Ed 68 p 14 (High)
Isabella McALLISTER, 70, b Redcastle, ROC
Isabella McALLISTER, 24, b Glasgow, LKS
