Leslie Alan Dunkling's "Scottish Christian Names" lists Sally as originally a pet form of Sarah, but then used independently since the 18th C.
Another diminutive of Sarah is Sadie. Sara was also used as a spelling, and Sarah was often used as a subsitute for the Gaelic Mór(ag).
Sarah might be thought to be non-Scottish but was ranked 12th in Scotland in 1858, 12th in 1935, before falling to 54th in 1958.

I'm a Sally - and that's what it says on my birth certificate . But I too was always told it was usually "short" for Sarah . I do know that I hated my name when I was little - it was not a common name in the areas of Scotland where I lived - I dreamed of being a Jean or a Margaret ...
