Anyone else looking for MATTHEWSON ancestors?.....

Post by elgarvmatt » Mon Sep 04, 2006 1:02 am

My ancestor, George Matthewson was born in Scotland in 1821 but I have not been able to pin down in which County. There are a few possibilites, not the least being George b.1820 in Canisbay to William & Elizabeth Cormack, but I have yet to prove that my George who died in 1864 in the Isle of Mann is this person.
He appears on the IOM when he married (for the second time) in 1859, then on the IOM 1861 Census then when he died in 1864. In all cases his occupation is given as Coachman and his birth is consistent with 1821 but no clues to where he was born apart form 'Scotland'.
Only other piece of concrete info I have is that his father was called William and he was a Steward at the time of George's marriage in 1859 but I cannot be sure if William was still alive at this stage.
Surely I am not the only person in the whole world looking for this family???
Cheers

Hi there

You've got a tricky one here ... I'm not sure what to suggest to try and track down your man here.

Were there any older children living with him at the time of the 1861 census, you might get a hint from that. Failing that, I hope someone else might see your query and come up with some sugestions.

Hi Liz, thanks for your reply, unfortunately by 1861 George was married and living with his wife and 1 child. The child appears to have died soon after the census but George and Emma had another two children, I have traced them back to Middlesex with their mother right down to my Father b.1910 in Cape Town.
George died in 1864 and is buried on the IOM and I have had a researcher leave no stone unturned to find some trace of his birth but no luck!
My best option is to find George's first marriage but that is also not as easy as it sounds! IF the Canisbay family is mine then there was a marriage between a Geo. Matheson & Lexy Lexy McPherson
in Thurso in 1839
Also IF this is my family they were no longer in Caithness in 1841.
Thanks again for your interest,I will sit back and wait for something to crop up. Hope springs eternal in the human breast.....
