Margaret Ann Miller.....

Post by stephlangan » Tue Sep 05, 2006 2:12 am

Hi all

Have given up chasing down Archibald Stevens  , and decided to take up the other side of the family.

Currently having problems locating info on Margaret Ann Miller.( my ggg grandmother) Can't ask my gran as now that I am researching this side of the family and I compare against the notes I took 20 years ago, she basically has EVERYTHING wrong so that is the wrong tree to be barking under!!!

I do know that she was married to David Nicoll ( August 1 1884 in Dundee). Parents listed as William Miller and Christina Miller ( ms Burns) . She died on March 19 1937 age 78. ( paretns listed as William Miller and christina Miller (ms Burns formerly called Roy)

There is a Margaret Ann Miller living a farming family on the 1881 census age 21 and in 1871 there is an 11 year old living with grandparents. Place of birht on 1881 given as Trinity Gask Perth, and on 1871 as Thurso. My Scottish geography not up to snuff so I am not sure what part of Scotland I am dealing with here. I will get my Atlas out tonight ( when I find it  )

If one coud point me in the right direction so that I can track down a birth certificate I would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks

Steph

P.S Have looked at "Millar" and one funny spelling of "Mailaer" and nothing seems to be right.

Hi Steph,

Think she is probably Margaret Ann Millar Burns ( wrongly indexed as Banks in the igi) born on 12/2/1859 in Perth. She was the illegitimate daughter of Christian Burns.

In 1861 Margaret A Burns ( age 2)was living with her grandmother, Margaret Burns, and her mother Christian M.B.Burns at Tolliehall (Perth Landward). Tolliehall was adjacent to Tulloch Farm. Both Margaret and Christian are shown as unmarried. Margaret was 49 and was a Linen Cloth Finisher, born Perth. Christian was 25, a Linen Bleacher, born Tibbermore.

Christian Burns, Linen Bleacher, aged 32 of Tulloch Row Perth married Andrew Roy,a Bleachfield Worker, on 21st June 1867. She is described as the daughter of James Burns, Calico Printer (dec'd) and Margaret Burns nee Burns. One of the witnesses was Margaret Burns (her mother?).

In 1871 Christina was living with her husband Andrew Roy and her two year old son Andrew at New Houses Redgorten. She was aged 35, born Tibbermore.

Margaret A.B Miller aged 12 was living with her grandmother at Tulloch Row. Margaret Burns was aged 59, a Bleachfield Worker, and was described as unmarried.

Margaret was stil living with her grandmother in 1881:-

Dwelling: Tulloch Row

Margaret MILLER U 22 F Perth, Perth, Scotland

It would seem that both Margaret (Miller) and her mother Christian were illegitimate (given her unmarried status in all the records it would appear that Margaret Burns was not married to James Burns, the supposed father of Christian). Margaret Burns/Miller appears to have been given her father's name as a middle name and to have subsequently taken it as a surname.

Not sure how you would go about identifying either James Burns or William Miller. However you should be able to find the death of Margaret Burns(mother of Christian) which would give you the names of her parents and a possible further step backwards.

Isobel
