Alexander Baillie, Penninghame Wigtown.....

Post by Reb » Fri Sep 08, 2006 1:09 am

I am trying to trace the ancestry of my great Grandfather, Alexander Baillie.
He was born abt 1853 in Scotland and perhaps in Penninghame Wigtown. In the 1881 census, he was married, had a wife Helen Kelly and sons John, Robert and daughter Mary. Alexander and Helen's marriage date was December 29,1875 in Stoneykirk, wigtown. After the 1881 census, they had two more daughters however, I do not know their first names. All members of the family immigrated to the USA and resided around the Closter NJ area.

Can anyone assist in finding the names of Alexander Baillie's parents? This information may be on their marriage record however, I cannot find it.
I am new to such searching and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
This information is vital to my probing deeper into my family history. Thank you

Hello Reb,

Welcome to TalkingScot.
Can anyone assist in finding the names of Alexander Baillie's parents? This information may be on their marriage record however, I cannot find it.
Reb have you tried to search for the marriage on

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

The record is there, because I just viewed it  and perhaps the reason you're unable to find it is because SP has her listed as "Ellen" and not "Helen" Not for nothing, but it sure looks like "Helen" to me on the cert. I'll post a copy in the Gallery.

Best wishes with your future research.

Hi Reb
Welcome to talking Scot! :D

Hi Marilyn
I'm not able to open the image - image software says there is some problem with it. But that aside, if there is a transcription error, it is well worth while sending a contact form to SP.

Best wishes
Lesley

Wow! I've never seen that before. The groom's parents are where the bride's parents should be and vice versa

I couldn't figure out what the stamp in the margin was referring to at first, then it hit me!

added later - sorry forgot to mention that it was the other marriage on the image that I was referring to

Hi Reb,
Is this your family in 1900? (Helen was indexed as "Mokelin"!)
Harrington Township, Bergen County, New Jersey

Bailey, Mrs. Helen, head, b. June 1856, age 43, Married for 24 years, 10 children, of whom 7 living, born in Scotland, came to U.S. in 1894
__Robert A, son, b. Oct 1880, age 19, born in Scotland, sculptor
__James C, son, b. Aug 1883, age 16, born in Scotland, cannot read or write
__ Maggie J, daughter, born Oct 1886, age 13, born in Scotland, at school
__Elizabeth A, daughter, born Feb 1892, age 8, born in Scotland, at school
__Helen A, daughter, born Jul 1898, age 1, born in New Jersey
Kelly, Mary E., mother, born Sept 1824, age 75, widowed, 1 child born, 1 living, born in Scotland, cannot read or write

It looks as though something was wrong with James, since at 16 he is still illiterate, unlike his siblings.

If this is the right family, it gives you the name of several of the daughters born after 1881. I wonder where Alexander was? His wife says she is married, not widowed.

All the best,
Sarah

Baillie family

Post by Reb » Fri Sep 08, 2006 1:01 pm

Sarah, thanks for the information. I agree that some of the content is puzzling. Many of the dates coincide with the dates that I have.
Mary Kelly is listed as the mother of Helen on their marriage registration
If this is the Helen Kelly who was married to Alexander Baillie, there are a few other known children who were missing on the list (my grandfather, John and another sister, Mary). Also, the name Molekin is one that I never heard before. So I guess at this point, I cannot rule it out or rule it in. It does give me additional leads to check and for that, I thank you for taking the time to provide this information. Regards, Bob Baillie

Hi Reb,
Helen was indexed as "Molekin", but was quite clearly "Mrs. Helen" on the original... so don't let that odd name bother you! It was just the indexer having a long day

Mary is back with the family in 1910, so this is probably your family. Alexander is still not there... in fact, he is never there from 1900-1930. Helen says she is married up until 1930, when she says she is a widow.

Here they are again in 1910:

Closter, Bergen County, New Jersey
Bailey, Helen, head, 53, Married for 34 years, mother of 9 children, 7 still living, born in Scotland, immigrated 1894
__Mary E., daughter, 33, single, born in Scotland, immigrated 1894
__Margarett J., daughter, 23, single, born in Scotland, immigrated 1894, stenographer in a law office
__James C, son, 26, born in Scotland, immigrated 1894, cannot read or write
__ Elizabeth A, daughter, 18, born in Scotland, immigrated 1894, stenographer (can't make out where)
__Helen A, daughter, 11, born in New Jersey, immigrated 1894
McBaig(?) McCaig(?) William, boarder 26, single, born in Scotland, immigrated 1908, house carpenter
Wilson, William H, boarder, 39, married for 9 years, born in New York, house carpenter

Next door:
Bailie Robert A, head, 29, married for 1 6/12 years, born in Scotland, immigrated 1894, sculptor
__Myra H, wife, 30, married for 1 6/12 years, born in New York, no children born

As for John... do you know that he was also in the Closter area with the rest of the family? Or could he have been somewhere else with his father?

Just guessing,
Sarah

Hi again,
Okay, I found the WWI Draft Registration cards for Robert, James and John

John Baillie says he is currently living in Philadelphia, although "home" is listed as Closter, Bergen County, New Jersey
He was born Dec 19, 1878 and is a carpenter employed by American International Shipbuilding Corporation
His wife is Emma A.
He is tall, medium build, black hair and brown (or green?) eyes

Robert Alexander Baillie was born 10(?) October, 1880
He is a sculptor
His wife is Myra
He is tall, of medium build, Dk brown hair and brown eyes

James Clark Baillie was born Aug 7, 1883
He is a farmer
He is tall, slender build, black hair, brown eyes and "mentally deficient"

Could this be John in 1910?

Ward 3, Queens, New York
Baillie John, head, 31 married 3 years, born in Scotland, immigrated in 1893, stonecarver (monuments)
__Emma, wife, 32, married 3, 1 child, born in New York
__Eric, son, 1 9/12, born in New York

In 1920 they are in Philadelphia, John is a carpenter in a shipyard. Eric is 11 and still an only child. Is this the right family?

Cheers,
Sarah

P.S. I haven't forgotten that your original question concerned the Scottish end of things :D I will leave that for others who have easier access to those records. Meanwhile, I hope I am finding some information you don't already have.

You found it

Sarah, this is the right family. This is incredible information.
Eric Baillie was my father and he was an only child. Robert A Baillie, my uncle was married to Myra. You struck gold!

It now looks like Alexander Baillie separated from the family (or he died around 1900). Is there any way to find his death certificate? Helen's death certificate.

By the way, how and where are you finding all of this information?
I cannot thank you enough for providing it to me. My email address is below.
Regards,

Bob Baillie

Bob,
Great news!
I'm still coming up empty with searches for Alexander, though.
Did your father ever speak of meeting his grandfather? It is odd that Helen lists herself as married until 1930, when she is "widowed". What was Alexander's profession in the 1881 census? That might help find him later.
All the best,
Sarah
