Where did they go?

Post by ninatoo » Thu Sep 14, 2006 8:17 am

Hi all,

I am working on my McCormick/McCormack branch after a break, and I had a bit of success today when I found a marriage for my ggg grandfather's sister Helen, b. about 1845 in England. This gave me the name of her mother, which I did not have. :D

She married William Oxley (b. about 1840) in Calton, Glasgow in 1871. Before they married they had a daughter Annie in 1869, and after marriage Mary Jane in 1872. After that they disappear. And also I can't find William on earlier censuses, nor reference to his birth at the IGI (his parents were listed as George Oxley and Ann Bennett). I am thinking he was either Irish or English, but it is just a guess.

None of them appeare to have died in Scotland, so I am assuming they immigrated...to where is the question!

Can anyone help me locate them?

Nina

I suspect that William's occupation may have had a lot to do with the situation, - "Naval Engineer" on the wedding register entry, and "Engine Smith (Journeyman)" on the 1872 birth register entry, so that he could have well been in the merchant navy, or moved to other ship building centres in the UK and elsewhere.

OXLEY is also one of those awkward surnames where quite differently spelt names can be heard as this spelling, - e.g. HAWKSLEY and HUXLEY.

Thansk for your help David and Davie.

David, I tried a few searches using wildcards for the alternative names, but nothing came up...but then I was hoping you were hinting at something you had found???

Davie, I can't get Annie to come up on the 1881 census at SP. Is her name spelled differently?

I wonder if anyone that has an has Ancestry subscription could do a search for the family in England...right now I just can't seem to get to my local LDS centre to check for myself.

Hi Nina,

I didn't search SP for 1881 census, but here is your Annie that Davie was talking about... it's from the BIVRI discs.

Thanks very much Anne. No matter what I tried, I could not get this record to come up at SP, so I sent them a contact letter.

Hi Nina,
I am not familiar with the Oxley name at all, never mind in the East End of Glasgow.
So I did a wee search on SP.
And came up with a few., which did surprise me.
There was a George, married onto one of the Jamieson family, with a Yuille connection.
That interested me.
On a sadder note, I also found the death record of Mary Jane aged one, in Bridgeton in 1873.
I have downloaded it, if you want it.
Awrabest

Thanks for your help Davie!

Yes it seems the Oxley name was not common in Lanark. I am still hoping someone can help me find them in England or somewhere...seems they did leave Scotland. I think Helen came from Lancashire, but then they could have gone anywhere I suppose.

Thanks again,

Nina

Hi Nelmit,

No I didn't look at freecen yet for this family. Thanks for finding that entry. That is interesting, isn't it? I need to investigate further. I wish I could find a definite William on a census to get his birthplace!

I did look at freebmd, but I had no luck. I am currently having trouble getting time to sit down and thoroughly investigate them, but that should change soon when my kids are away for a whole week.
