Henry Gray - scotland to canada .....

Post by karenc » Sun Sep 24, 2006 5:12 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some help with henry gray. He was from wick, caithness and born in 1887. He married mary elrick in wick in 1905 and then sometime after thhis he emigrated to canada.

he joined the canadian expeditionary force in 1914. He was then killed during the war in 1917. I have his attestation papers which i obtained from the archives canada website.

I wondered how i can find out which ship he would have sailed on to get to canada and when he would have went. Also how would i go about finding out if he had any children whilst in canada?

If anyone can help me at all i would be very grateful.

Thanks, Karen

P.S Henry was sometimes know as harry.

Thanks for that marilyn.

The only problem is you cant search by surname, only by area. Im mot 100% sure where he would have been. He enlisted with canadian expeditionary force in Winnipeg so that gives me some idea!

You can search by surname by province and territory. There are only 12 of these so it isn't too difficult too cover the entire country. Bear in mind that the census is only about three quarters transcribed and the completion percentage varies from province to province.

Hello Southpaw
You can search by surname....................
I cant see anywhere to enter a sir name to search the 1911 census on the collectionscanada site. Could you tell me where or in which part of the search terms you can do this ?

Go to the 1911 home page. Click on any province. Since your ancestor apparently enlisted in Winnipeg, try Manitoba. You will see a surname search box. Type in the surname and click on search. It turns up 408 Grays, including two Henrys and a Henry H. From there you can access the actual census page images. You can do the same for all provinces and territories.
