Help with informant's name

Post by pinkshoes » Sun Sep 24, 2006 8:45 pm

This relates to the Murries of "anyone missing a hipflask" thread. Found the death of John Murrie's daughter Elizabeth, and knowing she was already a widow, thought it worthwhile seeing who the informant was. Seems to be Elizabeth's daughter Margaret (who was born in 1874), but I'm blowed if I can read her surname - I can hazard a guess, but wondered what everyone thought. Unfortunately nothing else to compare the writing.

I've uploaded the file but not sure what to do next.

Elizabeth died at 14 Dick Place Edinburgh though her u/r was Gillingham in Kent. I'd love to know if there was a hospital in Dick Place, or if it might have been Margaret's house. At the moment I'm searching Scottish and English records and getting nowhere fast.

Maybe I should just put the hip flask back in the loft

Thank you for reading.

Best wishes

Hi Pinkshoes
Could it be Margaret G Bennett?
(But only if she wan't one for crossing her ts! Not a great deal of effort on that front at the end of Margaret. I have a sneaking suspicion there are a few other things it might be too! )

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi pinkshoes

I was seeing Bennet too but convinced myself I must be hallucinating  I've searched the Scottish records for a marriage that might make sense and so far there's nothing that leaps out of the indexes at me. I can tell you that on the 1881 census 14 Dick Place seems to have been a residence....

Hello Pinkshoes,

Margaret Emilia Burgoyne married Francis W Brunner (Durham;10a 627) in the September quarter of 1899.

Thanks Leslie and Jean

Bennet is what I saw immediately too, but closer look :? Also her initial should be E - in 1891 census she's down as Margaret Emelia Burgoyne (as is her birth info) - maybe she died and they had another Margaret, but if you look closely you can just about convince yourself it's an E - a bit top heavy.

Also, she was more than likely married in England, though none jumps out there either.

Jean the census info is useful - none of the names mean diddly, but at least there are more research possibilities than if it had been a hospital. Thanks for your efforts.

I'd give it all up, but the Murries and Burgoynes are much more interesting than my lot at the moment.

WHOOPEE - you are such a star Sporran! Absolutely no doubt it's her - Margaret Emelia's father was Governor of Durham Prison in 1901 census.

I'm pinning my hopes on them having children - the other's I've found all died single, or their children died young

I'm so happy

Best wishes

Hi Pinkshoes

The Edinburgh Crematorium is in Dick Place. but I can't find any evidence of a hospital having been there.
Several of the bigger houses which were once residences appear to be Nursing or Care Homes now.

I have done the same trawl as JustJean hoping a name would spring out but there appeared to be nothing in either Scotland or England.
The only B that came to mind with me was B*****! which was not a lot of use. Tried Bunuell, Bennett, Barnett but none seemed right. I even tried Brunswick.

Sorry to deviate from the original question but...

I can't resist reading the other entries on these and couldn't help noticing that the next person died of "Apparently Heart Disease"? certified by an MD who didn't see the deceased till after death.

OK, I know it was 1926 but didn't a sudden death require a bit more investigation than that? Some years ago, my mother-in-law died suddenly sometime in the middle of the night while she was visiting us and she had to have a post-mortem before we got a death certificate, even though she had been attending a doctor regularly for some time beforehand. Were things a little more "laid back" back then?
