Wills - total ignorance

Post by pinkshoes » Wed Sep 27, 2006 8:56 pm

Searching for the will of John Murrie (just in case he specified who should get the hipflask) shows 2 entries, one in 1881 the other in 1886, both coming up in Stirling Sheriff Court, both with National Bank coming up in the description. I think the Murrie family lived above the shop - census address is National Bank, Murray Place, Stirling.

John Murrie of the hipflask died on 19 January 1881. Are either of these documents likely to relate to him? Would he have had time to get his will sorted out in the 19 days of 1881 before he died? From his cause of death he may have had time to sort out his affairs, I'm not sure. From what I can read on SP the date is the date of the testament - I presume when the document was drawn up, rather than the date of probate or whatever it's called.

I think there can be more than one document relating to the same person - is five years apart feasible?

Help please - I don't mind parting with £5 to see it, but I'd like to be sure (as far as possible) that I've got the right document.

Sorry, I'm a complete duffer when it comes to wills, none of my ain folk having anything to leave to anyone.

Thank you.

Best wishes

Hi Pinkshoes

I had a look at this on SP - I would think yer £10 to buy both documents will be well worth your while - I am sure they both relate to your John Murrie.

Best regards

Hi Pinkshoes,

I bought a will the other week and panicked afterwards that the date was 10th May 1867....everything fitted apart fromt eh fact this was 5 years after the deeath of my person!

What had happened is that the will was made on 2/8/1862...whew, he died a short while after this....but one later date was the day it was recorded in the Books of Council & Session, some 4 years later but I'm still not sure what the very latest date was for.

Like Ted says, I'd get both.

Can't wait for next instalment, have been following this one, just haven't had anything of use to add until now...that's if this is of use

Good luck
Donna

Thanks for that guys. I've taken the plunge and got the first lot - will download the other one tomorrow, which I think will be dealing with the property John & wife apparently owned. Very interesting reading - specific provision made for daughters in the event that they never married (which they didn't) and raking back of "considerable expenditure" made on behalf of one of the sons, and a sum given to one of the married daughters. All looks extremely fair to me  Sounds like he was worth a fair bit, but don't know how to calculate todays prices

Sadly, although the china, linen etc get a mention, they never thought to include the hipflask ... the next instalment of which will appear very soon, but I'll post it on its original thread "anyone missing a hipflask".

Donna - I think you will not be disappointed - I'm trembling with the excitement of it all

Thanks for the shove

Hi Pinkshoes,
Try this site for what money of years ago was worth in 2005.

Well it beats anything my miners and ag labs ever scraped together : £577,763.90 before the hooses were added! And for the son's share that got clawed back, we're looking at nearly £17K - I guess law degrees cost about the same no matter when you get them (I'm still recovering from the shock of Miss Pinkshoes acquiring hers). As to the daugher's sum upfront - £40K+ - what on earth would she have done with that - a wee hoose maybe. Aye, I know what that feels like too

Looks like I have something in common with John of the hipflask after all !

Thanks Jack - really useful site.
