Which regiment to join?

Post by meelymunch » Thu Sep 28, 2006 7:51 am

Morning,
I have been thinking about my male ancestors and wondering what made them join the regiments that they did.
How did a man who had to join up for war decide - army, navy, air force ?
Was it family custom, if their fathers were in that regiment then they too joined ?
Nearest to home ?
Just personal choice ?

My grandad who died in WW2 lived in Nottingham but was in the Army in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers - 6th bt. As i have no idea about his father, am i to think that he was Irish and that my grandad was either following family tradition or that this was his families homeland ?

I'd be interested to know peoples views on this.

Cheers, Carole.

My Great-Uncle was in the Royal Scots(KIA) & his son followed in his footsteps.
They were born Penicuik,Midlothian. When the grandson choose the RAF for his service his Father wouldn't speak to him for years.
My Grandfather(brother to my Great-Uncle) also served Boer War & WW1.
He served in the Black Watch????He was a Lowlander to his toes.
My two other Bankie Great-Uncles one served in the Scots-Guards & the other the Argyll&Sutherland Highlanders-both from Dalmuir, both sides of Mum's family with roots in Perthshire(the Argylls)&the other Ross&Cromarty.
My Uncle was in one regiment doing his National Service when he heard the Black Watch were going overseas. He went to his CO & gave him a spiel about his namesake who had been KIA & how proud his Father would be if he could be transferred to his "family" Regiment.Lies off course(his namesake was the one in the Argylls) but instead of heading off to India he was put in a different Battallion & ended up in Germany.
I think different areas where associated with different regiments & then you would have the "Pals" regiments of WW1.

When there was a choice there could be a strong family tradition in terms of a connection to one regiment, with members of several generations serving over a long period of time. Obviously this applied to volunteers.

During wartime, however, and particularly when conscription was involved, there most often wasn't a choice, so the conscript went where he was told...........
