He's leaving on a jet plane.....

Post by joette » Fri Sep 29, 2006 3:35 pm

My nineteen year old nephew Fraser will shortly be heading off to Malaga via Provo for two years. He is off to serve a mission for our Church(LDS).
I am so proud of this fine young man.He has grown up a lovely, caring, thoughtful young man, gentle, kind & with a wicked sense of humour.
When he was born he had Respiratory distress Syndrome which can be fatal but he fought to breathe & came home to his two elder sisters & brother. He was always a contented bairn I expect because he was coddled & kissed so much by his siblings-there is five years between eldest & him.
When he was 15 months he contracted Menigitis & as his GP failed to diagnose it he was really ill when admitted to Sick Kids in Edinburgh.
He again fought back although he had to relearn how to walk& he would be very irritable at times especially when he had a fever.
As he has grown he has proven himself to be a man of integrity. He has worked hard at school & at his jobs-the Coop & industrial cleaning to earn the money to pay for his mission-with a lot of help from Mum & Dad.
He loves music & can play the piano & organ self-taught.
He has an A level in Italian(or whatever the Scottish equivalent is now).
He is busy learning Spanish & he will go to the Missionary Training Centre in Provo,Utah for three weeks to develop it further before heading off to Malaga.
Now this is a boy who would get homesick visiting Granny. His brother wanted to be a Pilot Fraser's ambition has always to be a good husband & father.
He does have the "stand back & light the touch-paper"streak in him-which he mainly controls & is a typically messy teenager.
He is a great source of joy in my life & always has been. When you phone he knows when you're down"Now tell me how you really are" after you have told him you're fine. He is my confidant & is like my Mum & any secret will go to the grave with him.
I see so much of my Dad & brothers in him(especially the touch paper part)& when I recieved pictures from Canada of my Dad's cousin standing in the fields of Sask.it looks just like Fraser even if there is seventy years of an age difference there.
I am so excited as he is travelling via Heathrow & as i am unable to get home before he goes I will be there even if it's just to have one last kiss & hug.
Phone calls only @Christmas & Mother's Day.No girlfriends. No TV for two years & yet he is so excited to be going.
Adios amigo & haste ye back we will miss you so much.

Joette you've brought yet another lump to the throat with this one. Fraser sounds a smashing lad, and I'd like to wish him every success with his amazing adventure. And best wishes to you and the rest of the family who will miss him while he's away.

Best wishes

Hi Joette,

Fraser sounds like a miracle child and a very special young man…no wonder you’re proud of him. I wish him all the best and hope that this new episode in his life is all that he wants it to be.

Regards,
Anne H
