Tollcross Glasgow.....

Post by karen kozak » Fri Sep 29, 2006 11:51 pm

was wondering where Tollcross is and if they have a cemetery there??
I might have found the missing brother James Begley whom married Isabella ONeil?? have no dates . Apparently they lived in Tollcross Glasgow and had 11 children and apparently they are all desceased..
Can anyone help??
Talking Scots have been a great help in solving my Begley/Begly brickwall and I'm working on finding the missing 2 brothers James and Archibald..they seem to be missing??
If I can find the cemetery and date of death I might be able to find out parentage?? Thanks Karen
am looking for John Begley and Isabella Mcarthur whom married in Dec 8 1836 in Neilston Renfrew Scotland, I've received the marriage bann and both at Kirktonfield in this parish... Thanks Karen

Hello Karen

Hmmmm.......well if this is the marriage you're looking for then you won't be able to view it online at ScotlandsPeople.

1912 BEGLEY JAMES O'NEIL ISABELLA SHETTLESTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/02 0001 No Image

I can't tell you why the image is not there! Unusual for a newish record not be digitally available. Maybe someone else on here can tell you why but I wouldn't hesitate to send a contact form to SP and ask.....you never know! Obviously all their children would have been born in a time frame not accessible from online. If you're looking for parents names to conclusively link this James to his family and the MC is not available....that only leaves finding his Death Cert. To narrow this up it helps to search for the wife first and to know if she was a widow when she died. You'll find Isabella's death easily in 1930....and then you'll also learn that James was still living. So search for his death between 1930 and 1955 and you'll easily find him in 1948 and then discover who his parents were.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Karen,

Yep, definitely a cemetery in Tollcross. My Granny was buried there in 1978, as was an uncle one week later. Various other aunties and uncles since, the last being in April last year.

Christine,

I see you have some Reids in your profile, they wouldn't by any chance be from Calton?
Just wondered since Tollcross isn't far from there

Hi Wini,

No, afraid not. My Reids are on my mum's side, Cardross, Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton.

However, if you have any Alexanders or Dawsons in the Calton, I might be able to help. Most of my dad's family ended up in that area, and there are still quite a few still there. Even my dad was born in the Calton.

Hi Christine

There is also a fairly large cemetery on London Road, just behind Celtic Park, which would be fairly close to Tollcross. If your family are Catholic the Archdiocese of Glasgow, 0141 226 5898 have cemetery records, and they may be able to help. I notice that your reid relatives came from Dumbarton, by any chance did your McFarlane come from their too. Mine originated in Roseneath, the furtherst back I have is c1750 Dugald McFarlane who married Janet Niven/Nivene, they had a large number of children. Their son John married Christine Colquhoun, and their son c1790 Malcolm married Sarah/Sally Cunningham. Do these names ring any bells.
Researching names: McQuade; Lynn; McSporran; Sweeney; Madden; Smith; McIlvaine; Burns; Burgess; McFarlane; Deignan; Barr; McMurchie: Dumbarton/Glasgow/Campbeltown/Co Tyrone, Monaghan, Down, Derry and Donegal

Hi Emamc,

Sorry, just seen your post due to computer problems over the last week.

Do you mean Dalbeth Cemetery? On the London Road, just along from Belvedere Hospital. My Granny's house (well my aunt's now), faces the front of Dalbeth, and they've been looking at it for the last 78 years.

Funny you should mention my McFarlanes and Dumbarton. My GGGrandmother, Annie McFarlane, was born at Old Kilpatrick c. 1829 according to the 1881 census. Her death certificate gives her parents as Parlane McFarlane (cotton spinner), and Agnes McFarlane nee Grant.

This is as far back as I go with my McFarlanes. though it's some time since I looked at them. I think I'll have another wee look. I could do with a change of surname.
