Is this my ggg granny?.....

Post by Ina » Wed Apr 13, 2005 3:21 pm

Need help trying to decipher this family. My ggg grandmother Flora Sinclair b. May 23, 1804 in Bowmore, Argyll, married Alexander Douglas on January 19, 1800. They produced the following children:
Ann b. Dec. 10, 1830
Duncan b. Jan. 27, 1833 (my gg grandfather)
Archibald b. Jan. 14, 1835
Donald b. Dec. 31, 1836

My problem is I searched for the death record of Flora Sinclair and it came up with Flora Morrison, daughter of Donald Sinclair and Isobel Currie, widow of John Morrison (no mention of Alexander Douglas). Death registered by daughter Catherine Morrison.

Found record that Flora Sinclair married John Morrison on Aug 31, 1840 in Bowmore.

I found Flora Morrison, grocer (age 76) on the 1881 Bowmore census records living with daughter Catherine Morrison age 50. Now this would mean that Catherine was born in 1831 while Flora was still married to Alexander Douglas.

However, on the 1871 Bowmore census I find:
Flora Morrison, grocer age 50 head
Catherine Morrison age 33, daughter
Donald Douglas age 28, son
Duncan Douglas age 12, grandson…….born Greenock

I know that Flora’s son Archibald Douglas (mentioned above) had an illigitimate son named Duncan born in Greenock in 1857. Am I right in assuming that this Flora Morrison is indeed my Flora Sinclair who married Alexander Douglas, even though Alexander Douglas isn't mentioned on her death certificate?

Hi Ina,

You really need a wee look at the 1841 Census to see if John and Flora Morrison are at the same address as a brood of Douglas children. Although the relationships won't be given, if you do find them altogether it would be a safe bet that that Flora Sinclair remarried a John Morrison.

Wonder who named was on Catherine's death cert. That would clear up for (near) sure who her parents were.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Sally, thank you so much for looking this info up for me. Saves me a trip to the LDS Center.

I guess Alexander Douglas either died or they were divorced before 1840 when Flora married John Morrison.

Andy my thanks to you also for your help. I couldn't find a death record for Catherine Morrison in Bowmore.

Hi BJDIEDM,

Yes I am definatly interested in any info you have on Alexander Douglas from Bowmore. Alexander is my ggg grandfather. There are still relatives on Bowmore that I visit whenever I go home to Scotland.

Please PM me. I'd be happy to share any info that I have.

Regards,

Ina
