Post by Carolann » Wed Oct 04, 2006 3:03 pm

Hi

I tried to look at the 1911 census but hey couldn't make head nor tail of it therefore I was wondering if anyone could help.

I am looking for Robert Frederick, Margaret Fredrick -They were on the 1881 census in Acton, Ontario. I have been unable to trace any of them. Robert was born in Scotland around 1849 and Margaret Frederick nee Scott. The children are Annie, Robert, Alice Margaret and Jessie.

f anyone can be of help I would be very aprreciative.

Hi Carol,
I ahev a sub to Ancestry ca this month and I had a quick look - but I can't see them in 1901 or 1911 nor any likely Marriages or Deaths - however if I tick the box to search outside Canada - there seem to be people of the right names and approx ages in Gratiot, Michigan ( ie USA ) - I reckon that's not too far from Ontario - if you like me do not have access to US records, is there SKS with access to US Collection whoi could take a look there ?

Good luck

Hi Carol,

This looks like them at 419 Park Ave, Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan:

Frederick, Robert, Head, 58, married for 39 years, b. in Scotland, Father born in Germany, Mother born in Scotland, Occupation: janitor in a college
" , Margaret, Wife, 58, married 39 years, 9 children-- 4 are still living, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
" Anna M., Daughter, 35, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
" Margaret J., Daughter, 26, born in Canada, Fa & Mo born in Scotland, stenographer in an office

They all state they came to the U.S. in 1887.

Does this sound like the family?

Regards,
Sarah

Oops, sorry, that was the 1910 census I gave you above.

Now for 1900, since we know they were there by then:
Water Street, Arcada, Gratiot County, Michigan

Frederick, Robert, Head, b. June 1852, age 47, married for 29 years, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland, School Janitor
" Margrett R., Wife, born May 1852, age 46, married for 29 years, 9 children-- 5 are still living, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
" Annie M., Daughter, born March 1873, age 27, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
" Robert W., Son, born Apr 1876, age 24, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland, Porter Hotel
" Alice S., Daughter, born in Feb 1878, age 22, born in Canada, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
" Margrett J., Daughter, born in Feb 1880, age 20, born in Canada, Fa & Mo born in Scotland, Book Keeper
" Jessie F., Daughter, born in Mar 1882, age 18, born in Canada, Fa & Mo born in Scotland, At School

This time they all say they came to the U.S. in 1886

Do you know which one of the children died between 1900 and 1910?
With a surname like Frederick, it seems likely that Robert's father was born in Germany, as he said in 1910, although he doesn't say so in 1900.

I looked, and couldn't find, young Robert in 1910, and thought he might have been the one who died, but he reappears in 1920, with his widowed mother and two sisters:

424 West Superior Street, Alma City, Pine River Township, Gratiot County, Michigan

Fredricks, Margaret A., Head, age 68, widowed, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
Robert W., Son, age 44, single, Sander in a Truck Factory, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
Anna M., Daughter, age 40, single, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland
Margaret J., Daughter, age 38, single, Bookkeeper in a Hardware store, born in Scotland, Fa & Mo born in Scotland

And THIS time they all claim to have come to the U.S. in 1885!!! Gets a year earlier each time...

I can't find them anywhere in 1930. Do you know if they went back to Canada?

Oh, in the middle there, I found that Michigan had a state census in 1894. There is no image, but here are the indexed records (the indexer obviously had a lot of trouble with the handwriting on this one!):

Name, Age, Birth , Location, County

Joseph Frederick, 42, Scotland, Gratiot
?? frederick, 37, Scotland, Gratiot
Annie Frederick, 12, Scotland, Gratiot
Robert W. Frederick, 13, Scotland, Gratiot
Alice Frederick, 17, Ont Canada, Gratiot
Margret Frederick, 15, Ont Canada, Gratiot
Bessie Frederick, ??, Ont Canada, Gratiot

Robert Frederick

Hi Sarah

This is the family. I will try and find Robert's death and see if it gives his father. My GG Grandfather Charles death certificate here in Scotland doesn't name his father but I know he was born in Berlin? I have been trying to trace Robert but kept looking up Canada so I will try and find his death and hopefully it will give me my GGG grandfathers name and will take the information you gave and try and trace some of the Fredericks in USA.
This has been very helpful.

Thanks

Carol
