I am searching for my gggrandad Andrew Turley who was married to Agnes Pollock, (info not on Scotlandpeople). On the Douglas 1851 census he was born 1818 (New Monkland), 1861 Douglas census born 1816 (Airdrie). Could someone lookup please the 1841 census to see were he was then.
Agnes Pollock was born at Carnwarth about 1821-24.
I am coming back “home” in May, where would the best place to go to try to get birth details of Andrew, Airdrie churches or the GRO?

The great majority of non-established presbyterian church records can be found at National Archives of Scotland (NAS) in Edinburgh, but, in case any extant records of interest to you are held elsewhere, I'd recommend that you check the situation in advance of your visit with NAS - see their website and index at http://www.dswebhosting.info/nas/ , - not all their info is indexed as yet, but they are getting there, - an email to them is well worthwhile, but give them a reasonable time to respond; as well as checking out the situation with relevant local archives, - see http://www.talkingscot.com/links/libraries.htm, - in addition I'd recommend that you check out the situation with family history societies that cover the area, - Lanarkshire FHS, and G&WSFHS, - see http://www.talkingscot.com/links/fhs-links.htm

Hallo Maggie,
Several of my Livingstons were born, brought up and died in the area that is called New Monkland in older documents and Airdrie in later ones. Wasn't sure if you had realised that it was the same place, different name.
Old MOnkland is what is now called Coatbridge.
Enjoy your visit "home"
All the best

Hi Maggie
When you visit you must try and make time for a visit to Airdrie Library. I don't think they hold any birth records but they do have wonderful photos of old Airdrie and the surrounding villages along with lots of great information. They are not open all day everyday so check out the www.northlangov.co.uk website (I think Wednesdays they close at lunchtime). A word of warning though - its one of those places where time flies
If its not already on your 'must do' list then also try and fit in a visit to NRH in Edinburgh. This is where you will definitely find your birth details along with all records (Parish and Statutory). The Mitchell Library in Glasgow is also fascinating and would hold the records that you are looking for although they are not all indexed.
One final word of warning..........leave anyone who doesn't have an interest in finding your 'deads' at home, I've spent many a minute trying to quickly leaf through tonnes of interesting info whilst my husband paces the floors muttering about my obsession!
Hope you find who you're looking for

Airdrie Library
Maggie,
The local history dept (upstairs) in Airdrie Library is open until 7pm on a Mon,Tue,Thurs & Fri. And even all day from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays. The Kennedy collection of photoghraphs was donated to the Library by a local sanitary inspector (a Mr Kennedy - perhaps a relative of Sue's!) who took all the photos whilst on his rounds in the town during the 1950's and 1960's. There are also many other albums of photos available for you to purchase copies if you wish.
Unfortunately, like many such establishments, they are short on resources and only have two microfiche readers for Census lookups. If you are intending to visit for this purpose it would be advisable to 'phone in advance to book a viewer.
Regards,
Helen
