Hi Boland
This is not really my area, but I found this which looks hopeful

If you click on the Regimental Histories link down near the bottom of the page it takes you to a site which gives a list of Regiments - rather a lot to chose from!! :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Boland

If you post the photo up to the gallery here on TS you may get some advice from other members on which regiment it is likely to be - this may narrow the field a bit for your research.

Best regards

Ted

The Ayrshire regiment of foot was The Royal Scots Fusiliers (21st of Foot) - reorganised as the county regiment of Ayrshire, Dumfries-shire, Kircudbrightshire Wigtownshire, Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire in 1881, amalgamated in 1959 with the HLI, to form the Royal Highland Fusiliers.

The RSF were never a kilted regiment, hence the tartan trews :!: , - see http://www.rhf.org.uk/

A much better general site for regiments of the British Army is regiments.org , in this case, see http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/021RSF.htm .

All that written, it could be that he joined another Lowland regiment, i.e. not kilted.

Boland

Although not familiar with Scottish Regiments in the manner that could assist you.

The image is not that clear, is the uploaded image from a digital photo of the original picture. If so perhaps a scanned image would be easier to peruse. the angle of the photo leads me to think it is a digital photo.

I'd echo Stew's comments.

If the original is of a quality such that the details of the badge are clear, then a high quality scan will allow an unambiguous identification of the regiment.

All I can say for the moment is that it's a Lowland regiment.
