Changing History.....

Post by Guest » Thu Oct 26, 2006 1:35 pm

A couple of years ago, on Scotlands People and TalkingScot, I researched the mystery of my Grandfather, Auld Smith and his mother Sarah.

I delved into the family legend that Auld Smith's father was, in fact, Johnny Goodall, an football legend of the 19th century. It made a great little story, but alas, as Auld Smith was born illegitimate, the proof may never be found.

Imagine my surprise to read in Wikipedia today, that Johnny Goodall married his Scottish childhood sweetheart!

Is this a world record? Becoming a legitimate baby after nearly 150 years!

I await developments...

but was the childhood sweetheart he married, the mother of the child?
seeking McColl from Donegal and Greenock, McKay from Antrim and Greenock;
Whiteford from Ballycastle and Greenock; Tucker from Port Glasgow, and McGinty.

Childhood sweetheart

Alas, not to be. Look much of history, somebody got their info 2nd or 3rd hand.

Johnny married Sarah Rawcliffe, a Lancashire lass who was most unlikely to have been his 'childhood sweetheart'.

If Wikipedia has got it wrong, then I shall have to correct it.

ps In the current search, I found a mention of Archie, Johnny's brother and Ireland internationalist! He appeared in a Winnipeg theatre with his novelty act - walking around the inside of a 50 foot hoop.

Definitely a novelty family.

Dave

I have Johnny and Archibald Goodall, age 16 & 17, stepsons to a distant relative of mine, (Joseph Barnes) in Kilmarnock on the 1881 census. Their mother Mary was Joseph's second wife.

Sloan family

Post by LindaMc » Tue Oct 31, 2006 4:38 pm

Dave

I read your entry on Google re the Goodall footballing brothers and see that your Sloans are from Kilmarnock area. I have a Margaret Sloan in my family, married to my GGGrandfather Samuel Barons.
They were married in Maybole in 1849 and on the 1851 Census listed at Maybole. In 1861 they were at 114 Kilnknower Street, Kilmarnock and in 1871 and 1891 at 12 Park Street, Kilmarnock.
Any connection with your Sloans?

Your Kilmarnock Sloans may well be connected. The Kilmarnock/Riccarton area has an incredibly high concentration of Sloans (though I have yet to match them all together!)

I find it intriguing that there is a Goodall/Barnes or Barons connection to your Margaret. Tenuous (very much so!) but a connection.

I will get back to you on this one.
