Did they go back to Ireland?.....

Post by STUARTDALGLEISH » Mon Apr 18, 2005 3:50 pm

Guy’s

I’m (as always) looking for a bit of help here. I have some elusive Hislop/Heslips here.

I’m looking for death certs for a Samuel Hislop, born abt 1844 in Ireland and married a Jane Donnelly at Glascarhill, Ireland on 16.07.1867

I’ve looked for his and her deaths but to no avail.

They had 6 children that I know of

Mary 1868 – 1941 West Street, Glasgow
Samuel 1870 – 1872 West Street, Glasgow
Margaret 1872 – death still to find West Street, Glasgow
Jane 1874 – death still to find Salisbury Street, Glasgow
Anna Eliza 1877 – death still to find Salisbury Street, Glasgow
Agnes 1880 – death still to find Upper Main Street, Glasgow

1871 Census has them living in West Street as above.
1881 Census has them living still in Main Street, Glasgow as above

Samuel’s mother and father are also in Glasgow 1871 in Eglington Street all of which are in the same area, and are in Rose Street in 1881. The father dies in 1886 in Rose Street.
So it looks like they did not move about a lot.

Mary marries John Jack 30.12.1898 in the Gorbals and both parents seem to be alive then they disappear. Can’t find them in the 1901 Census so did they move back to Ireland with the Granny Jane Donnelly.

Any ideas would be great.

I’ve looked for marriages of the other girls but can’t seem to get and matches??

Puzzled as ever

Cheers

Stuart

Got the pad and paper out tonight and have been searching.

Found Eliza Ann Hislop heading the family, still in Rose Street with daughter Helena and son in law staying with them.

Still looking for her croaking

Stuart

Not fully clear what you have and what you don't...........

Samuel HISLOP m Eliza Ann MARTIN c 1844, probably in Ireland. They turn up in Glasgow in the 1871 and 1881 census, - Samuel died 1886; Eliza Ann turns up in 1891 along with daugher Helena and son-in-law John FLANIGAN and family of 4, but no trace of Eliza Ann thereafter. Nor can I see a trace of Helena and family.

Samuel HISLOP and Eliza Ann MARTIN had at least three children, Thomas W, Helena and Samuel.

Samuel Jnr married Jane DONNELLY in Glasgow in 1867, but no sign of them after 1881 apart from daughter Mary's 1898 marriage to John JACK ......... and maybe Agnes as a 21 year old housemaid in 1901 ......

So looks like nearly everyone hightailed it back to Ireland ??

David,

That's exactly where I got to also. Samuel Hislop and Eliza Ann Martin had another child called Frazer, he was a twin of Helena but he died in 1856 aged 2 'Days' wee soul.

Thomas William Hislop married Margaret Sutherland and stayed in Glasgow, he died in 1905

Soooo it looks like Helena and John Flanigan and the sprogs along with Granny and the other son Samuel with his wife Jane and their remaining sprogs all returned 'home'

Seems a bit strange don't you think after being over here for so long and seeming to be well established.

I'll maybe have a look in the 1901 English Census, is there any Irish census records online??

Cheers

It might seem strange from the info that you have to date, but it may have been the case the various family members were back and forth across the North Channel..........

As far as I'm aware, as of a couple of months ago, no Irish equivalent in terms of the census for the whole country, but I seem to recall seeing mention a wee while ago of various bits and pieces being on-line. Remember that the 1911 census for Ireland is "open".

Stuart,

any idea which part of Ireland Jane Donnelly originally came from? Just supposing they would have gone to somewhere they were familiar with? I live in Ireland and might be able to help - not like Scotland as there is little enough on-line but if you know the county it could help.
