Hi Daryl
Trying to find relatives before 1855 can pose quite a problem.
Have you managed to identify all of their children in chronological order
Once you have established their partners and their families it shows whether they followed the traditional naming pattern. If they did it is even more likely that their parents followed it too. If you are not sure about the naming patterns use the search facility at the top of the page for 'naming patterns'. there have been several useful posts on this recently.
The names of the first born son and first born daughter should give a clue to, at least, the fore names of their grandparents.
Use IGI for an initial search and once you have found possible candidates confirm them in the OPR on scotlandspeople, visit Park Circus to see the records or use the nearest LDS family Centre or Mitchell Library and check them out.
