Old Photos

Post by Pandabean » Mon Oct 30, 2006 9:59 pm

I just came into the possesion of Old photographs from my Nana who sadly passed away back in September. So far I have been able, with the help of my aunts to identify some of them but others people are not so easy to identify.

My question is: is it worthwhile taking photos to the nearest supermarket to scan them onto CD?

It is just that I was in a supermarket earlier today and found they did this service. I have been using the scanner in the Uni library which is not too good as you can see the scan lines in some parts. I said to my aunts that i would scan and print them and pass them out to them next time im back in Falkirk.

Just a wee suggestion, but if you count up how much it would, or even already has, cost you to to use either the Uni or the supermarket scanner, you might find it a lot cheaper to have a look at the great deals for simple A4 scanners. Apart from anything else, it's a lot more convenient having one of your own and it won't get used to death (hence the lines across your scans).

My last little one only finally gave up the ghost after five years of sterling service. I now have one of those multifunction printers that does it all, but I can honestly say the quality of my old flatbed scanner was just as good.

The uni scanner is free to use but then everyone does use it.

I have looked at scanners online but I am unsure as to what resolution would suit my needs best. Also I want to try and keep costs down. Any recommendations at all at what sort of price and quality I should be aiming for?

For the basics, look for

Max Supported Media Size 216 x 297 mm
Optical Resolution 1200 dpi x 2400 dpi
Max Document Size 216 mm (Letter A Size) x 297 mm (A4)
Interpolated Resolution 19200 dpi
Input Type Colour

Also, try and get one with a Z-Lid. That just means that the lid hinge will raise up a bit to allow you to scan thicker things like books and the like.

Scanners like that can be got for around £40 retail, but there are a lot of better deals out there. Amazon, eBay, even if you have a PC World you can get to, or have a look at their online shop?

Mary,

I had a look in Comet earlier today and they only had a couple in the range of £49 which is slightly expensive. I think the res was 4800*2400. I am sure I have seen cheaper ones.

I've just had a look on the PC World web site and they have a couple of nice deals, scanner at just under £35 and, even better if you fancy saving on deskspace, an HP PSC1410 Multifunction printer for just under £40.

They have a shop..

Also have a look at the Argos (£39.99) and Amazon (£37.99) sites, but remember they charge P&P.

Hi all
Also have a look at the Argos (£39.99) and Amazon (£37.99) sites, but remember they charge P&P.
n.b. Amazon don't change any P & P on orders over £15 (and no, I don't get commission!!)

Best wishes
Lesley
