Hi Loobylou

Welcome to the most relaxed and informative Scottish site on the Web.

We can answer most queries but would need a bit more information to go on.

Things like -who
-Where
-When
If you tell us what you know so far we can often add quite a bit to that and -who knows - you might even make contact with a relative you didn't know about.

Hi Loobylou

The birth record is there waiting for you at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk -
log on, register and buy some credits, and 2 minutes later you'll have it on the screen in front of you.

A Scottish birth register entry shows the place and date of the marriage of the parents, and that marriage register entry will show the grandparents of Alexander McAulay McCallum. Birth, marriage, death and census records will give you the chance of tracing the family back another 2 or 3 generations.

Hi Loobylou,

I was on a rare visit to NRH on Friday and had a quick check for you. Literally done as the bell was ringing at the end of the day, so just the bare bones.

Alexander McAuley McCallum born 18/10/1899 at 38 East King Street, Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire. Father Patrick McCallum, Cab Driver, Mother Elizabeth McCallum m/s Wright. They married 9/7/1889 Helensburgh.

Marriage actually 10/7/1888 at Helensburgh. Patrick was 19 and his addresswas 22 James Street Helensburgh. Parents were James McCallum, Labourer, dec'd and Winifred McCallum m/sDoolan. Sorry, seem to have omitted Patrick's occupation. Elizabeth Wright was 18 of East Princes Street, Helensburgh. Father Robert Wright, Gardener, Mother Elizabeth Wright m/s Kelly dec'd.

Patrick McCallum(above) was born 4/4/1869 at Row, Dumbarton to James McCallum and Una McCallum m/s Dolan who were married in Jan 1866 in Helensburgh. James was 21 and was the son of Peter McCallum, Labourer, decd and Margaret McCallum m/s Mundey. Una was the daughter Patrick Dolan and Agnes Dolan m/s Docherty (other info. I have seen gives her name as Ann and I now wonder if I mistranscribed this in the rush).

This(believe it or not) is Una/Winifred and some of her children, including Patrick,in the 1881 census:-

Census Place: Row, Dumbarton, Scotland

Annie MC CALLUM (MITCHELL) 9 F Helensburgh, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel: Stepdaur
Occ: Scholar
Elizabeth MITCHELL 11 m F Helensburgh, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel: Daur

Her husband James McCallum had died from consumption on March 26 1877, aged 28. He was described as a Labourer married to Winifred Doolan, parents Patrick Mccallum dec'd and Margaret McCallum m/s Munday.

Winifred Dolan or McCallum,a 35 year old widow, occ. Washerwoman married Alexander Mitchell a Labourer aged 25 on 31/8/1880 at Helensburgh (address for both was Havelock Place). her parents are given as Patrick Dolan and Ann Dolan m/s Docherty.

Patrick and Ann were also living in Row in 1881:-

18 year ols James Dolan shown as their son is possibly the James Doolan born in 1862 to Winnafer Doolan at Row and therefore more likely to be their grandson.

Margaret McCallum or Munday (mother of James Mccallum)died in 1884 in Dumbarton. She was living at 13 Havelock Place in 1881 along with her brother
