Photo Dating

Post by Pandabean » Fri Nov 10, 2006 4:49 pm

Can anyone help me get a relative date from this photo:

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-898

Andrew Ross (Person on the far left as far as i know) was born 1896. If the older couple in centre are the parents then William (father) died in 1919 and Mary (Mother) died in 1945.

Hi Andy
The hat & shoes of the young lady on the right are saying 1920s. The fact that the older ladies are wearning the same style hats sugests maybe later 1920s- early 30s, but that is just forma quick look . A more careful analyis may reveal more.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley. :) But I dont think it is as late as the 30's based on the other photo described below.

I have added a couple more photos to the gallery of this family to help with dating.

The family shot shows Andrew and Christina, my nana and her brother. I have narrowed down the date for when this was taken and it is between 1926 and 1928. Is this the same woman in the single shot (slightly pinkish coloured photo)?

As can be seen in the group shots the lady in the single portrait shot is in one of those as well.

Also any further ideas on the dates?

I still havent been able to get any more out the photo except that they may be siblings but they look older than what they would appear to be if the photo was taken in the early 10's - 20's

Hi Andy

Nothing to add on the date, but a thought that maybe the first group photo has been printed in reverse. All the gents appear to have their coats buttoned the lasses way. That would mean the parting of the girl at the back is on the other side.

Lol just realised that they were scanned in back to front. I am busy scanning some of my grandads war photos and tried to read a Number plate of a lorry and it was back to front. :S

Just getting used to the new scanner.

Hi

Looks late 20s to me. My mother has a photo with similar hats etc which features her uncle as a young adult and he died in 1931 at the age of 20. That dates her photo to a very narrow range and I would say yours looks roughly the same date.

Hmmm that could be an idea that would fit. In one photo there are two young kids that look similar to my nana and her brother. But it begs the quesion, where is Andrew's wife seen in the family shots?

Also is the single pink photo the same person as in the family shot of Andrew, his wife and children. Any ideas of dates for the pink one? My aunt says that it could be my great gran, Christina Miller b. 1904

Hi ,

I would be almost sure in saying early 20's. I have several pictures of my mum with frieds at that time and all had the same type hat, also the ladies shoes are a dead give away, yes early 20's I am sure.

I have to agree that it is around the early 1920's. I have a picture of my mother and grannie. My mother was born in 1922 and she was about 3 or 4 years old in the photo. My grannie has a hat of similar style to the women in the picture.
