Merchant Navy uniform?

Post by Tracey » Sat Nov 11, 2006 11:12 pm

I am going to attempt to upload a photo to the gallery. :?

Sorry for another photo dating q but !.......can anyone date this uniform ?
I did find out about the studio but that was no help. I have no idea (well maybe one) who he is. I cant even say the hair cut is of a certain era as it could have been done today.
Any clues welcome

Looks like Royal Navy to me, not the Merchant Navy.

Hello all

I am not too convinced that the chap is in Royal Navy Square rig.

Firstly his haircut: He does not appear to have the regulation short back and sides, it appears to be a "square back and sides that was permitted at least in the RAN in from late 1960's early 1970's. I have a picture of an uncle in the RN in WWII where he has the regulation short back and sides.

Secondly: His white front, that is the white shirt with blue piping around the collar. His white front has a round collar with blue piping. RN and RAN white fronts have a square collar. This square form of white front has been part of the uniform since at least WWI.

I would hazard a guess that he is either in merchant service or he is part of a shipping line, they often used to wear "naval" style uniforms.

Ps. RN and RAN uniforms are/were identical except the RAN has an "Australia" shoulder flash on each upper arm.

And another thing, - no badges of any sort on either arm .........

Possibly also crew member of a private yacht?

I'll probably be shot down in flames here, but...

Notice the scarf?

Couldn't be a Sea Scout, could he?

Hi Mary

Throw as many possibilities as you like because i would love to narrow down the year of the photo hopefully by finding out what the uniform is.

My Pennies worth
My grandad was in the RN during WW11 and I have an old cracked photo. Your guy seems to be wearing the same shirt ie white with blue round neckline and the same neckscarf, that my grandad wore. My grandad has a hat on though.
Cheers

Hi Caraid

I have been trying to find the emails i had concerning this [rant] i shall say no more on that one :D !

This photo is one of those old thick cardboard - ish type one ( cant even come up with the right word for that right now either :? !) so later than WW11 i think
