James Stewart Brickwall.....

Post by PaulaD » Wed Nov 15, 2006 7:37 pm

Hi All,

My GGGrandfather James Stewart born c 1848 died 1904 aged 56.
Have him on census 1871/81/91 in Midlothian. Can't find him on 1901 and I suspect he is hiding in Edinburgh somewhere but too many to check. No luck on 1851/61 either. Birthplace on all census given as Barony. Have had a look on IGI but nothing jumps out at me. He married Margaret Boyle (parents John Boyle b Ireland & Mary Coll - another brickwall) in Haddington on 4th Apr 1865 age 17 1/4 which would put his birth at Jan 1848. His parents were John Stewart & Agnes Bone dec'd (another brick wall!) Can't find any siblings for either James or Margaret. Marriage was Catholic so does this mean I'm not likely to ever get through this wall :(
Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Paula

Well, Barony is in Glasgow. Have you tried searching just in Glasgow?

Hi Mary,

Yes I've tried that. All James Stewarts born 1846-1850 have wrong parents and 1851 census has too many to check. Can't check census under parents names either as there are 21 Agnes and 47 John Stewarts.
Why did they have to have such a common name.

Tell me about it! My Stewart's seem to be all James, John, William, Robert and George

Just to add to the confusion, there is an Irish connection (My GG Grandfather James was living in Belfast when he met and married my GG Grandmother), but haven't established yet whether they went over there for a short time, or were there for a generation or two

Hi Mary,

I can beat that - in addition to my James Stewart problem I've also got 7 Alexander and 9 James Gibb and 8 John Brown all in Edinburgh
Reckon I need to take out a 2nd mortgage to trace that lot

Not necessarily :!: , if you can stretch to a train fare to Edinburgh.........

At New Register House in the Athens of the North, once you have paid your £17 entry fee for the day, you can view as many images as you like.

I haven't yet needed to do a full 7 and a half day's continual viewing of images, but did a birth search about 9 months ago, during which I viewed just over 1,000 images in 5 hours, and could probably have reduced that to around 4 hours if I hadn't decided around 150 images into the search to go back to the beginning and restart.

It probably wouldn't be possible to achieve the same viewing rate with census images, - in the absence of any such experience I'd estimate somewhere around 100 per hour ..............

Paula

My sympathies in your searching for James Stewarts, I have Alexander Stewarts in my lot. But cant see any James' in my line.

I had a look on the 1851 Census for Glasgow, Barony, Gorbals and Govan from G&WSFHS but could not find a match for your James around the likely age with suitable parents. Perhaps as DWW suggested a visit to NRH may be the way to go.
