Looking for James Fraser.....

Post by ali2511 » Thu Nov 16, 2006 6:18 pm

Hi

This is probably a long shot but I'm trying to find my great great grandfather :)

I know he's called James Fraser from my great grandfathers marriage certificate from Glasgow in 1904 - they were called:

Joseph Fraser
Agnes Brodie

(but he's listed as deceased) his wife is listed as Rachel Fraser - ms -Steen - would love to find out more about her too!

But..I cant find any marriage cert between them or census records.

Are there any other routes to go down ?

Any help is really appreciated :D

Hi Ali and welcome to TalkingScot. Hope somebody can give you a hand.

Can you tell us a wee bit more please. How old were Joseph and Agnes when they married. Occupations? What is James' occupation? Getting the age of Joseph and Agnes would give a (very) rough idea of James & Rachel's marriage date. Any clue if the family was always in Glasgow (as far as anyone knows  ) or a chance they moved from elsewhere?

Anything else you can tell us might increase the chance of one of the kind souls here helping you to find something.

Just a thought when you're looking for a marriage - I remember a few Steen families in my village - they were actually Stevenson but the name had been shortened with use. As I say, just a thought.

Best wishes

Thanks for the welcome Pinkshoes :D and sorry for being vague :D

So Joseph & Agnes were married in 1904 - Glasgow

Joseph Fraser - 23 - City Cleansing labourer
Agnes Brodie - 22 - Weaver

shows on their marriage cert that Joseph's mother & father were:

James Fraser - (deceased) Carter
Rachel Fraser (deceased) ms - Steen (looks like Steen anyway)

I'm not sure whether James and Rachel were originally from Glasgow - bit of a dead end there I'm afraid - it was a bonus finding Joseph & Agnes so to find anything on James and Rachel would be amazing :)

Many thanks for any kind help from anyone and you'll be at the top of my Christmas card list!! :D

Thanks v much Cathy

I've actually just found a record for them on familysearch.org

Its very basic though- just lists the birth of Joseph Fraser in 1880 - parents - James Fraser & Rachel Fraser Steen - he was born in Londonderry

Do you know if there are records to search for Northern Ireland?

I'm probably really pushing my luck now :)

Hi again Ali

Now you've found the birth, check out the marriage on IGI of James Frazer and Rachael Steen 11 May 1863 Carrick, Londonderry

Have a look at the Ireland message board - might get a few ideas there.

Good luck

Try ancestryireland.com, but be warned, their pricing system for viewing records is a bit strange compared to what we are used to on SP.

Hi Ali,
you should be able to get a birth certificate for this date.
Ideally, you would have a Parish.
Someone will be along soon with better info, but in the meantime,
have a look at the "Search" logo above, and put in some key words.
