Seeking information on William Duncan Lyon born 18th October 1869, at Fetterangus, Old Deer. His mother is Mary Ann Duncan, his father is James Lyon.
He is living with his grandparents James and Ann Lyon at 1871 ( Mains of Inverugie, Aberdeenshire) and 1881 census (Seatown Crimond, Aberdeenshire ).
At some time after 1881 he goes to the NW Territories in Canada.
He returns early in 1901, to get married on 30th January 1901 to Jessie Ann Chalmers ( parents John Chalmers and Jessie Urquhart (decd)) at Woodhead, Aberdour. He gives his address as Moffat, NW Territories, Canada.
He and Jessie arrive at Portland Maine on the SS Tunisian on 17th February 1901, with their destination given as Wolselely, Canada.

William Duncan Lyon ( 1869-1956)
And now I can post how quickly success can arrive, within an hour or two of posting this on two or three message boards a reply came guiding me to the books "Bridging the Past" Vols I and II produced by the Wolseley and District History Book Committee where there is much on William Duncan Lyon, who is described as one of the early pioneers to this part of Saskatchewan, Canada and his 75 descendants:
see www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=1025236
all the pages of both books are viewable online
you can even search for names in the two volumes, and then go to the page numbers that appear.......
and there are photos of William Duncan Lyon his wife Jessie Chalmers and their children plus much more.
There are also many other emigrant Scots mentioined in these two books.
from a rather pleased

Hi Puffin:
And here I was, pleased that I'd found them in the 1901 census
The 1911 census is available online, but you would have to know where they were living in order to scroll through to find them.
From:http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/cache/index.html
1901 Census of Canada Page Information
District: TT ASSINIBOIA (East/Est) (#203)
Subdistrict: Moffatt M(2) Page 8 Schedule 1 Microfilm T-6552
78 Lyon William D M Head M Oct 18 1869 31
78 Lyon Jessie A F Wife M May 15 1869 31
I did find reference to another book "They cast a long shadow" by Kay Parley which has several references to Wm. Lyon. I checked and it is also on the same web page you cited.
Thanks, for noting that link for us., I'm sure it will come in handy for future questions.
Good luck with your search.
Frances

William Duncan Lyon
The link to the 1901 Canadian census is most helpful. I did not know of this resource.
Must go hunting for more Canadian cousins, ( as if 75+ found yesterday is not enough for the time being!)
The resumption yesterday of my hunt for one of the " lost sheep" on my tree, who I just knew yesterday as William Lyon born c 1869/70, has resulted in this whole flock ( or should I say pride) being discovered once his true identity William Duncan Lyon has been unearthed.
Thanks for your interest, and thanks also to the current free offer (running to the end of November) on ancestry.com for searching immigration records where I found William and his new wife returning to Canada via Portland Maine in early 1901, which set the ball rolling to my finding his marriage in Aberdeen just a couple of weeks before his return, and confirming his identity as eldest son of my great grandfather James Lyon (1851-1938), whose name appears on the marriage cert. with William's mother Mary Ann Duncan.

William Duncan Lyon
Am now in communication with one of William Duncan Lyon's grand-daughters in Canada so that is terrific news, there are ancient photos being exchanged and WDL's diary material from the days of his emigration from Aberdeenshire on June 1st 1888 onwards.
