Where is Blantyre, Scotland

Post by Canadian girl » Sat Nov 18, 2006 10:26 pm

Hi
I came across a information on a Margaret Young (no mention of a husband) here in Ontario with almost the same birth information as I have for a Margaret Young in my family. It states she was born in Blantyre, Scotland. It is a long shot but thought I would find out where Blantyre is in Scotland and perhaps I can find her birth information. On the death information here in Ontario it states her birth is 1825 in Blantyre, Scotland. If this is the same Margaret then I am hoping her parents names are Andrew & Mary Young.
I thought she was the youngest in the family that came from Scotland but I have reason to believe on another matter that she might have been first born.
thanks for any help

Hi CG,

Blantyre is just over 10km (or a bit under 10 miles in old money) south-east of Glasgow. It is in Lanarkshire, if you are searching any documents grouped by county.

For a current map showing its location relative to Glasgow, click on the link below.

All the best,

Hi Canadian Girl

Just to add to Andrew's comments.
It has been almost swallowed up by Hamilton. Nearby are Bothwell, Motherwell, East Kilbride although East Kilbride was just a tiny village until it became a New Town 30-40 years ago.

Hi
thanks to both of the posts..... :D

Well I was told and it was written in a family book that the family came from an area (no mention of what area) outside of Glasgow.
Ok so now I have to find the birth information to this girl in 1825 to find out if her parents are Andrew & Mary Young. Scotlands site is probably the best since I don't have a membership with anything else.
Any other help or suggestions or information would be great.
thanks

Hi again Canadian Girl

I have Youngs in my line from Cambuslang, Lanarkshire unfortunately My Margaret is a bit too early (1803) and I haven't found any Margarets in later generations. At least the family name was common in that general area.
