Making Sense?

Post by Miss Poohs » Thu Nov 23, 2006 5:29 pm

Ok I'm going to try and word this as consisely as I can so it makes sense.

Here goes - I was up in the Mitchell for a flying visit on Tuesday - looking for a rellie of the in laws.

The elusive Katie Hislop.

I found her on the 1901 census in the Glasgow Poorhouse on Parlimentary Road, she was 11 at the time.

I thought I had nothing else to do but toddle up to the Mitchell and look for her - but she's no' there!!! :?

What I'd like to know is, is she likely to be listed anywhere else? I'm assuming there must be a record of her some where, as to - who put her there and why.

Can anyone advise?

Hello,

I take it was the poorhouse index you looked at.

There could be a couple of reasons you could not find her application.
1. The application was not made under her name.
2. You have used a different spelling of her surname compared to the index. It only returns exact spelling.
3. The record did not survive.

Hope this helps,
Annette M

Thanks Annette

In the 1901 census Katies name is spelt Hislop, but years later becomes Hyslop.

If she was entered by an adult other than her parents would the entry be under their name rather than Katies?

Those poor records are something else by the way - very interesting.

Katie is a real mystery to me as she disappears after her marriage in 1916 - very strange.

Hi Miss Poohs

Were you the lady in, in a hospital type uniform?

I was in the Mitchell all day Tuesday half the time searching Poorhouse records.

And I found mine. There were only about 200 James Johnstons (without an 'e') and 350 with an 'e' but he was there ! Can't wait to see the hard copy.

You'll like this one then Sarah

Katie Hyslop married Peter Kerr Dewar on the 21st Jan 1916 in Dalmuir Clydebank.

They both then disappear - but I have a feeling he was killed in the war shortly afterwards, nothin' concrete though.

I'm running outs ideas to find her - so fire away with any suggestions, they will all be gratefully received.

Hi Miss Poohs,
I had a good feeling about these folks. You can set your mind at rest about the fate of Peter. :D
This looks like him arriving in New York from Liverpool in 1923:

Dewar, Peter
Age 28
Married
Shipwright
Last permanent address: Scotland, Clydebank
Nearest relative in country whence alien came: Mrs. Kate Dewar, 5 Union Street, Clydebank
Final destination: New Jersey, Eliz Port

Fast forwarding to 1930, we find them both in Elizabeth City, New Jersey, with a daughter born in Scotland. He is indexed as Pattie-- I remembered that Peter and Patrick used to be interchangeable, so it looked right. As I look at it, it might just be Petter with 2 't's. It's one of the messiest census forms I've seen, with things crossed out and written over, but...

New Jersey, Union County, Elizabeth City, Ward 12, Block 111
177 Madison Avenue
Diwar Petter (or Pattie), Head, Age 35, married at 21, born in Scotland, came to the U.S. in what looks like possibly 1923, does something unreadable on the railroad
---Kate, wife, age 26, married at 22, born in Scotland
---Gean(?), daughter, age 13, born in Scotland

Kate may be fibbing with her age a bit, since she is older than Peter, but they both claim to have been married for 14 years, which fits.

Got to get some sleep now, but I'll have another look tomorrow to see if there is anything else.
Regards,
Sarah
