John Bowie, I think !

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to find a birthdate for John Bowie. I realise there is probably NO IMAGE on SP, as he was born around 1827. I think it may have been in Whitburn. His mother's name is Margaret Lang ( Laing ) She married Alexander Fleming, ( can't find record on SP ) BUT, they are in the 1841 census in Whitburn.
John's name in the census is Fleming, but I've been told that he was illegitimate.
I've tried using Bowie, Lang, Laing and Fleming, any suggestions ?

Well, still no luck finding his birth, but I do have his death cert.
John BOWIE , Pit Labourer, married to Jane ALLAN.
Died 11th October, 1895, aged 67 years. Armadale
Parents , John BOWIE and Margaret BOWIE, ms LANG
Informant, Alexander BOWIE, son, 71, Station Row, Uphall

In the 1851 census, he is using the surname Bowie, and his relationship to Head ( Alexander Fleming ) is ammended to step son

Hi Cath - We're related!! Don't know quite how mind you, but I have Alexander Bowie (the informant on your cert) son of John Bowie & Janet Allen. He married Elizabeth Dunlop who was my 1st cousin twice removed (apparently).

Well, OK its an exaggeration to say we're related as Alexander isn't actually my kin, but it's the closest I've coming to finding a relly on TS!

I am pleased to see you are related it is exciting. I have a friend in Oz who is related to the Bowie's from Dornoch do you think there may be a connection there. I will let her know to look at this thread.
