THREE HELENS.....

looking for a birth for helen dumma, her maiden name was cockburn, her parents were alexander cockburn and helen platt or plate on some cert she married thomas dumma and on her death cert she was 71 in 1871.

the second helen cockburn that i need a birth for was married to a joseph archer she died in 1873 age 46, her parents were thomas cockburn and
elspth kay .

i have nothing on the third helen cockburn only that her maiden name was platt or plate, she was married to alexander cockburn dont
know when they married their first child that i have for them was born 1791 his name was thomas.

Your Helens are certainly an elusive bunch. The nearest I can find on the online IGI are the siblings of one of them.

Father: Thomas Cockburn, Mother: Elizabeth Kay

ALEXANDER COCKBURN - Birth: 21 FEB 1821 Ratho, Midlothian
JANE COCKBURN - Birth: MAY 1825 Scoonie, Fife
THOMAS COCKBURN - Birth: 14 JUN 1829 Largo, Fife
DAVID COCKBURN - Birth: 02 MAY 1834 Newburn, Fife
MARGARET COCKBURN - Birth: 31 JUL 1841 Scoonie, Fife

Given the years between these births, it is reasonable to expect that there were more children. They seemed to move about a lot. A look at the 1841 census might give the names of more children. However a quick search for David Cockburn age 5 to 8 gives 4 results, none in Fife.

Hi Katie

I saw Andrew's post and thought it looked familiar. I remember you posted about the Cockburns a wee while ago. I searched on SP for you and found a record which I copied.

In Andrew's post there's an Alexander Cockburn. I found what I believe to be his marriage. The good news is that it was in 1855. They married on 29th November 1855 at East Kirton (poss Linton).

Alexander Cockburn, born Ratho, (33) of 7 Corruna Street, Leith (lawyer) married Isabella Hogg (30) a housemaid of East Kirton. She was born and registered in the Parish of Prestonkirk.

Her parents were Alexander Hogg, lawyer and Isabella Wilson. Alexander's parents are shown as Thomas Cockburn, forrester, and Elspeth Cockburn or Elspeth Kay.

The minister was John Thomson of the Free Church in Prestonkirk and the witnesses were William ?? something illegible, and John Hogg.

These places might give you some more places to look. Also the fact that Alexander became a lawyer might suggest the family had some money.

Are you sure it said lawyer and not sawyer?? The latter would seem more likely given that the other father is a forester. I have a couple of certificates where sawyer looks a lot like lawyer.

thanks for that anne, you are right the cockburn men were wood sawyers and not lawyer but you never know what you might find.
