John FLETCHER Mull, Argyll.....

Post by scotincanada » Sat Nov 25, 2006 2:18 am

Hello,

So many John FLETCHERs! I am trying to determine the parentage of a John FLETCHER who was born about 1775 parish of Torosay, Mull, Argyll. This might be the "missing link" connecting the group of Mull FLETCHERs & the FLETCHERs who remained in the traditional place of FLETCHER origin, Glenorchy, Argyll. The 2 branches were understood to be fairly closely related, but how & when?

John FLETCHER (b. abt. 1775 Torosay, Argyll) married Catherine MCFARLANE (b. abt. 1781) on November 23, 1803 at Glasgow, Lanark. They were at Kilninian & Kilmore, Argyll for the birth of their 1st child, Donald FLETCHER, in 1804. They had 8 or more children after that - some recorded as being born at Salen, Kilmore & Torosay.

Catherine may be the d/o Malcolm MCFARLANE & Christian CLARK, bapt. July 28, 1781 Kilninian & Kilmore. Hoping to find John's parents. Thank you!

Hi Mary:

There is a record in the Banns and Marriages of the Old Parish Records on ScotlandsPeople for John Fletcher and Cath* M*far* in 1803. It would provide the names of both sets of parents.

There are also 2 John Fletchers listed as being born in 1775, but not for Torosay.

There are several John Fletchers listed in births and Christenings in the IGI for 1775.

Hope this is of some help.

Frances

Hi Mary & Frances
There is a record in the Banns and Marriages of the Old Parish Records on ScotlandsPeople for John Fletcher and Cath* M*far* in 1803. It would provide the names of both sets of parents.
With some OPRs you migth be lucky enough for a parent to be mentioned, often the father of the bride, e.g.:
  • X and Y daughter of Z, after proclamations of bands were married.
... but sometimes only the names of the couple are given:
  • X and Y both in this parish enrolled their names for proclamation to marriage. They being three several times proclaimed in two days and no objections offered were married here on 27th same month.
Sometimes the occupations of the father of the bride and/or the bridegroom may be mentioned so it may be a help to see it, but might just confirm no more than you already know. Do you know when your John died? I suppose there is no chance he survived until after 1855?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Mary,
You may have already seen this msg on Rootsweb Mull?

http://tinyurl.com/y2l3hs

Seems you're not alone with the problem of John....
But it does mention when & where Catherine McFarlane died.
