Post by djcrtoye » Sun Nov 26, 2006 8:51 pm

Can somebody help me during my research I have found several of my rellies were born in Campsie. I have an idea where it some where near Stirling or am I way out with that. The dates were between 1836-1859. What would it be called today.

Hi there

I'm not so good with the Scottish geography lessons but I too had family in Campsie in time for the 1851 census so had to do a bit of learning about it for myself. Campsie is a Parish and it's in Stirlinshire but Campsie also included a few smaller settled areas. My own family are found living in what was called Greenhead which is a portion of Lennoxtown on the 1851 census. The enumerators description found on their portion of the census included this: Northeast part of the village of Lennoxtown lying on the north side of Main Street, East of the road to Slatefield, including Slatefield, and also including the villages of Greenhead, Burnhouse, and Rowantreefauld.

I also learned a bit about Campsie from reading the Statistical Accounts of Scotland for this area. This can be found in the linked tab above to "Sources" and then "Statistical Accounts".

Hope this is helpful

Best wishes
Jean
