Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone knows of the clans in the Central Scotland area or even surname distribution in that area?
Thanks,
Andy

Thanks. I keep finding and loosing this site and forget to add it to my favourites.
Some of it does make sense especially with the Fairnie family being concentrated in East/Mid Lothian. Also the same goes with the Whitson family.
Is this just based on the Census Index?

Hi
I am only aware of what they say on their home page.
Mind I suppose that it is the same with the census as it wasn't intended for family history research was it?
In fact in 95 yrs time the 2001 census will be of less assistance as it didn't have a question about place of birth.

A recent research project based at University College London (UCL) has investigated the distribution of surnames in Great Britain, both current and historic, in order to understand patterns of regional economic development, population movement and cultural identity. This website allows users to search the databases that we have created, and to trace the geography and history of their family names..
It would appear to be something intended for other purposes which has an application in Family History.Data Sources:
UK and Ireland data: Experian International Ltd
US data: Dr. D. Kenneth Tucker, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada
Australia data: Pacific Micromarketing Pty
New Zealand data: Circular Distributors
Great Britain Census of 1881: Economic and Social Research Council Data Archive

Hi
I know this map has been postit afore, but jist in case oanywan missed it.
http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/clanmap.htm
As fawr as ah kin make oot oan readin' a wee bit o' history, is that the Clan system didnae exist sooth o' Dumbarton, other than a few o' the Western Isles.
Ah'm no even sure if Arran coonts as bein' in Teuchter territory.
