I'm searching for the parents of Matthew McAlpine born in Denny Stirling
around 1807-1811. Matthew was married to Euphemia Russell in 1832
Denny. I've tried the old parish records on scotlands people hoping that
if I found their marriage I would find the parents of both Matthew and
Euphemia, but I found nothing. It has been suggested that Matthews
parents were William or Wallace McAlpine and Helen Nish but I can't find
anything on them at all.
I hope someone can help.

The only one I could find on IGI was...
MATTHEW MCALPIN
Christening: 20 JUN 1809 Carriden, West Lothian, Scotland
Parents:
Father: MICHAEL MCALPIN
Mother: ELIZABETH AITKEN
Is there any chance this could be him and he might not have been christened in the Parish he was born in?

Unfortunately Mary, it's incorrect. Bless you for trying to help.
I know that Mathew was married to Euphemia Russell in Denny 1832. One of their sons was James, born Airdrie 1836/37. It's Mathews parents that I would love to find and I'm struggling. The problem is that I'm not at all sure if they came from Lanark or Stirling. As I said, I've looked on scotlands people but couldn't find anything
Thanks again
Betty

Hello Betty
I dont know why I didnt have a look for this earlier. It is from the BVRI.

But I couldnt find a record for Denny Stirling. So perhaps he was born in West Lothian and not Stirling. Where did you get the information that he was born in Denny?

Hello Stewie,
Euphemia Russell was born Denny, Stirling. She married Matthew Gardiner McAlpine Denny. ( from the IGI ) I'm sure I have the right person as they had a granddaughter Euphemia Russell McAlpine. I think it's fairly common that marriages take place in the district where the bride comes from which makes me feel it's correct!
Although it's spelt McAlpin not McAlpine, I think your New Monkland theory is more likely to be the one.
I also think Wallace McAlpin and Helen Nish must surely be the parents of Matthew Garniner McAlpine as I was given this information from more than one person on Rootschat, and ofcourse from you also.
I'd be interested to see if you agree!

Hello Betty
It does look that way. I had a look on IGI for Matthew and Euphemia, but apart from one birth of Euphemia they are all submissions. This is not to say that they are incorrect. I recenly had a look at some submissions for one of my long deid punters and the approximate ages were found in a census record. So I would stick with them for the present but just be aware of the dates. As they were submissions that is probably why I didnt find the marriage or births on BVRI.

HelloStewie,
Thanks for your advice. I'll keep an eye on it.
Do you know how I can find out more about Mathews parents, Wallace and Helen? I've been researching my Family Tree for a good while now, but there is such a lot I don't know eg. where to look for information. I subscribe to" ancestry.com" and I also use "scotlands people" but when you get back quite a long way, I don't find scotlands people all that good. Perhaps it's me.
Well Stewie, thanks again.
Betty

Hello Betty
I have been doing this game for about 3 years now. I understand that when you get back into the dark recesses of time. Information can be a bit thin on the ground. This can be partly due to our long losts not registering their wains births or their own marriages. It was not cheap to register with the kirk. It may also be that the records got lost in the mists of time due to a number of factors. It could also be that they were not members of the established church. Or that they didnt actually marry in a formal way, they were only married by "Habit and Repute". There is a thread on irregular marriages here on TS.
Just last year I joined Genes Reunited and now have two distant cousins one on each main line. But the one on my mothers side is stuck at the same spot I am stuck at. That is a gggrandfather who was born around 1827 in the Americas. We have his parents names but that is all we have.
Another in my fathers side appears to have English/Irish connections so I am at a brickwall with them too.
Dont be discourage though, sometimes brickwalls can come tumbling down. This forum is the best on Scottish ancestry, and the guid folk on here are the most helpful I have come across. I recently purchased the British Vital Records Indes from the LDS Church, and that has helped me some, but I still have not explored its full potential as yet. But then again if they werent recorded or records were lost then they wont be on the CD's.
Scotlands people is due to release the Old Parochial Records online very soon, and perhaps that may help in our searches.
Another resource is Freecen, I have found some of mine on that site, and they are adding to the enumeration districts all the time. As the name suggests it is free. Plus forums such as Rootschat.
