More Mull MCKINNONs.....

Post by scotincanada » Wed Apr 27, 2005 4:04 pm

Hi again,

Thank you Sally, Jack & everyone for your input. This MCKINNON thing of mine is a big tangled ball of string - I have 3 MCKINNON branches to my paternal ancestry, 2 MCARTHURs & 2 PATTERSONs - aaaahh!!

As I mentioned in another message here, the family of my gggrandparents, Archibald MCKINNON & Catherine MCARTHUR (married 1831 Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon, went "missing" along with children Neil, Donald, Ann & Catherine for quite some time. I have no births for the children either.

Archibald was the son of Neil MCKINNON & Margaret MCARTHUR. Now Jack tells me an Archibald MCKINNON (same parents) married his aunt, Alice MCDONALD in 1843 in Mull, had 2 children, moved 2 Govan & had some more. Hmmmm Could Catherine MCARTHUR have died pre 1843 & Archibald remarried?? Can anyone see a death for Catherine or a marriage for Archibald & Alice? Thanks so much!

Re Archibald McKinnon

Hi Mary,

Managed to find notebook 2 (from when i 1st started 3yrs ago). The Archibald McKINNON who married my GGG-aunt Alice McDONALD ended his days in Govan, but was previously in the Gorbals area.
I've only "pencilled in" 1843 Mull as their marriage - was just going by children's births, but it would probably be before then.
Here's the basics of the family in 1851 - this Archibald is born Kilninian.

1851 cens 644-2 (617) Ed 21 p 17 (Gorbals - Laurieston)
7 Oxford Lane.
Archilbald McKINNON, head, marr, 36, carter, b Kilninian
Alicia M., 35, b Kilfinichen
Margaret, 7, b Kilninian
Murdoch, 5, b Kilninian
John, 3, b Glasgow
Janet McLean, mo-in-law, 63, b Kilninian
Ann McDonald, sis-in-law, 23, b Kilfinichen
Lachlan McDonald, bro-in-law, 21, b Kilfinichen [my GG-GF]
--
I've not done anything on this side of the family for near 3yrs - found it was too complicated for a beginner! Far too many of the same names.
It hasn't helped much that the early Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon OPRs were apparently lost in a storm when being transported across Loch Scridain.
-----
He may have no connection to you at all, but i came across a Neil PATERSON (56) b Salen in Mull 1851 with Edinburgh born wife Cathrine (56) - children Ann 18, Helen 15, Margaret 14 - all b Salen. With them was son-in-law Hector McDONALD (30) b Kilfinichen with wife Catherine (25) b Salen.
--
And a Malcolm PATERSON (58] b Salen in Mull 1851 with Kilfinichen born Florence (52) - children Angus 26, John 16, Jean 14 - all b Kilfinichen.
Also with them was Angus (14) & Margaret McKINNON 10), nephew & niece - both born Glasgow. A visitor was an Archibald McDONALD (22) b Kilfinichen, and a gr-son Colin? McDonald (3) born Glasgow.
--
Now you know why i just buried them for the time being and got on with something easier....

So bottom line is that this is probably a different Archibald - ie if yours was born Kilfinichen! But quite a coincidence on his parents being the same.
It would be useful if you could find your GG-GF Archibald with Catherine in 1851 (not online at FreeCen yet).

These two families are connected. Hector McDonald (son-in-law to Neil Paterson) is the brother of Alicia McDonald who m. Archibald McKinnon. I suspect that "Alicia" is actually Julian bap 1814 Kilfinichen, but she is a d/o Murdoch McDonald/Janet McLean.

The McKinnon siblings (nephew & niece) are children of Angus McKinnon/Flora McKechnie (possibly originally McEachern). This couple m. 1824 Glasgow, and Angus must therefor be a brother of Flora McKinnon (wife of Malcolm Paterson). Incidentally, another child of this couple was Catherine McDonald McKinnon born 1827 Glasgow
