saving 1881 census to hard disk

Post by annpa » Fri Dec 22, 2006 7:43 pm

I've tried searching the site for a previous mention of this topic with no joy. perhaps asking the wrong question!

Some time ago on a different site (can't remember where) there were instructions for loading the 1881 census disks from the LDS onto one's hard disk, making searching much faster, and no changing of disks.

Does anyone know how to do this, and could they give me some simple instructions as to how I would go about it please please please!!

would be ever so grateful!!

Cheers

[woohoo]

Wunnerful :D Ta Muchly, Christine :D

Just put all the BIVRI stuff on my hard disc and, not only does it remove the need for the infuriating disc-swapping routine, it is also a sooooooo much faster search

Just as long as you are aware that this may interfere with the ability of your system to access other LDS data sets on CDs via your CD drive ........

Yes, David, I know. However, I carried out a wee "go back" exercise, just to make sure I could do what I need to do if I buy the 1881 census.

It's actually not going to be that difficult.

Hi Annpa,

First point I need to make; Before I ever make changes to the registry I back it up first. NEVER rely on Windows Restore to "restore" it properly as I have learned to my cost in the past.

Right, so having made the changes in the registry, and copied the appropriate files to the recommended folders, I did a few searches to make sure it all worked fine. Great stuff, so far. However, you will notice that the option to add a new data set in the Viewer's opening window is now missing. That's because the registry has been changed to read direct from the hard disc.

To check that I can later add new datasets, I returned the registry to its original settings and all was back to normal, but I then changed it back to the new setup until such time as I buy new datasets.

Thanks for the information on loading LDS CD's into hardrive. When I get back home I will load my two sets into the hardrive.
Currently I am house sitting my brother's big hoose in the hills, lovely living right next to state forest and the kangaroos parking themselves on the lawns at night  Oh and what a view oot the doors and windas!
