I just got some Viruses for Xmas

Hi All

I don't know if anybody can help me with this or not. I have McAfee Internet Security Suite 9. It has informed me that I have two viruses, but that it cannot repair or remove them. One of them is New Malware.j and another is listed as Patched-Function.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? It is not something that I wanted to get for Christmas.

A Google for New Malware.j turns up quite a lot of information - it appears to be a Trojan.
Looks like you may need to spend a little time reading about it and how to get rid of the blooming thing. What a pain. Best of luck with it.

I take it your McAfee virus definitions are up to date? If not, that would be the first thing to do, I think.

Thanks I will try to find out all I can about this mess. My McAfee is up to date, but I am having trouble getting to talk to anyone there.

A bit of further reading on the web seems to suggest that McAfee is not able to cope with that particular Trojan (as you haev found out). Hope you can get some help with it.

Try the AVG anti-virus. The free version is great and has been known to sort out things that the more expensive progs can't cope with.

Hi All

You are right. I finally got in contact with McAfee and they want me to pay more money to get rid of it. I think first that I will try to get into contact with a radio program that deals with various computer programs.

I am feeling a little upset at the moment and still haven't wrapped all my Christmas presents yet.

I am sorry to hear you have some wee nasties in your computer. You would think that when you pay for a service/programme you wouldnt have to pay extra to get a nasty removed

I currently use McAfee Internet Security Suite myself, but I think since the last upgrade last month it is a bit toooooooooo efficient now, as it takes forever to load a page, yes even this site and the reply, and reading/loading my emails too grrrr.
My subscription expires in a few weeks and I dont think I will bother renewing it.

I have been told by a few people to try AVG, and that is what I intend to do. hopefully that will solve my browser page loading and email problems.

It is good to have a efficient anti virus programme, but when it becomes too efficient, then it is no longer a help, only a hindrance.

Hi all, at risk of sounding as if I know what I am doing, I too have MacAfee as my basic virus-avoiding agent with firewall. I do however use Spybot:

which is free, and finds about fifteen bugs (spyware and trojans) every ten days or so which MacAfee has let through, but I do have to do a hands-on clean up when I remember.
I´m open to suggestions, but so far this has been a reasonable compromise between slowing and infection.

No perfect route to follow.............

Hope you, Shiela, and others sort all your trojan and virus problems before the New Year!
Anyone got a spamfilter which reads your mind?...................

Hmmmmm... I've very occasionally come across a situation where Norton has been unable to remove the virus/trojan/spyware whatever, but there have been detailed instructions on the Norton website for dealing fully with it.

Spybot is good, and last time I checked the recommendations from relevant gurus, the advice was to run both it and Ad-Aware SE Personal (also free) - http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

My view - for what its worth - I have used Norton & McAfee - but found both to slow things down a bit - McAfee is good for blocking boot setcor viruses but not so hot on trojans and the like. I tried AVG (the free version that Emanday suggested) - I soon the upgraded to the Pro version of AVG - which cost about £25. I'll stick with this - never had a virus problem since - gets auto updates about 3-4 times a day AND it doesn't slow down your system (at least not Windows XP with SP2). Just to be extra careful I also use Spybot - as suggested by Thrall - sometimes Trojan Virus programmes piggyback onto spyware programmes - Spybot gets them. I also back up everything on my hard drive to an external hard drive daily - like most of us on TS I would rather lose a leg than irreplacable years of research

This may sound a bit over the top but I learned the hard way - got a Trojan visus about 3 years ago which cost me a hard drive and everything on it.
