Hi,
My ggggrandparents are in doubt! Mary HOUSTON (thought to be b. 1809) married Hugh MCGREGOR (s/o of John & Janet MCGREGOR) in Balquhidder, Perth in 1832. For Mary's parents, we had Peter HOUSTON & Mary STEWART of Trinity Gask, Perth.
Now I have obtained Mary's death reg. (thank you Sally & others!) & her son, James MCGREGOR, informant, gave James HOUSTON & Mary MCPHERSON as her parents. Was James wrong or are we? Can anyone say? Thanks for some new leads!

Hi Mary,
Usually the best piece of evidence is that which happens closest to the event.ie the death cert for the death. However,in this case I would think that the information on the birth cert would be the best as to who the parents are as they themselves would give the information and the information on the marriage cert would be second best as Mary would have provided this herself.
In the case of the death cert. there are a number of reasons as to why the wrong parents may be on it the first of which is the stress the individual is under when reporting the event.I remember someone here on the forum mentioning that when searching for the names of someones parents on a death cert the informant (the son-in-law)had actually given his parents names by mistake.
So unless you come up with even more evidnece I would stick with Peter Houston and Mary Stewert as Mary Houstons parents.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherK
