Still trying to locate rellies

Post by mcblondie » Wed Jan 03, 2007 4:32 pm

Hi all,

Me again. Still trying to find relations with the name of Palokas or Palauskas and Paplauskas. Grandfather Jonas Palokas had a brother who resided in Bellshill, we think his name was Juozas (Joseph) and we also think he was a tailor or seamstress. There is a strong possibility that over the years they may have anglicized there name, but i have no strong leads to go on. So if anyone out there in the Bellshill, Bothwell areas knows of a Lithuanian family who may have changed there name please get them to contact me. My grandfather arrived in Scotland around 1910 from Lithuania and worked in the coal mines. He married my gran Mary Callaghan from Blantyre 1915 at St. Joseph's in Blantyre, they had a very big family of whom quite a few reside still in Blantyre areas.

All help greatly appreciated. :)

Hi Mcblondie

I know its a long-shot but have you tried the Valuation Rolls and Electoral Rolls for 1918 through to about 1925. He may appear under his Lithuanian name in the early years and a name change only show up once he got married.
I would suggest going forward about 23/24 years years to see if their family appear on the Electoral Roll as they reach 21.

When men change their name they often keep the same initials because they may have cigarette cases and lighters with their initials engraved on them. Miners often scratched their initials onto their piece boxes and carbide lamps too, so there is a chance that he followed this.
It might seem a long haul looking at every entry in a Valuation Roll, but Blantyre is not too big and I can assure you, from personal experience looking through the Ayr books, that the names pop out of the page at you.

Post by mcblondie » Thu Jan 04, 2007 11:45 am

Hi Russell,

Thanks for the info. Where would i locate the valuation rolls, can we see them online? I never gave them a thought. If you can give me some more advice on how to locate them i'll certainly trawl through them :)

Thanks,

Katie

An interesting link, Mary. I don't have many Scottish rellies in Glasgow, but was able to confirm that one of my English people who lived in Hyndland Street, Govan in 1901 was no longer there - just as I suspected! Thank you.
