Cross St Glasgow

Post by Jacquie » Sat Jan 06, 2007 5:23 am

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if 31 Cross St was a hospital or orphange in 1880. I have a 9 month old who died there, but her Father and 3 siblings were living at 2 Stuart St in Partick. Her mother had died just shortly after her birth.
Thanks for any help
Jacquie

Hi Jacquie,

Cross Street in Partick doesn't go up to 31 as the highest odd number is 29 in the 1913 Valuation rolls, and the rest of the street seems to be mostly houses with a shop dotted about. Maybe number 31 had been pulled down by that time?

Also, Cross Street changed name to Fordyce Street sometime before the 1940's but after the 1913 valuation.

An advanced search on the 1881 census CD for Lowland Scotland brings up four Cross Streets, none of them in Glasgow.

Eastwood, Renfrewshire (562)
Paisley High Church, Renfrewshire (573)
St Quivox, Ayrshire (578)
Peebles, Peebleshire (768)

All the best,

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

If you search for 31 Cross St you find it in Govan.
Dwelling: 31 Cross St
Census Place: Govan, Lanark, Scotland

What was the name Jacquie? Perhaps she was staying with relatives.
Here is a modern day map showing Fordyce St (Cross St) and Moy St circled red(Stuart St)
As you can see they are only a few streets away from each other.
Kind regards,
Annette M

Thanks,
That puts them right in the area where my family is from, but I thought that was Partick, not Govan.
Jane Fraser was 9 months old when she died at 31 Cross St. in October 1880. Her Father, Robert Fraser as the informant gives his address as 2 Stuart St Partick. Her Mother Elizabeth died 2 weeks after she was born.
The 1881 Census shows Robert Fraser Widow, with 3 other children, Robert 8 , Isabella 6 and Elizabeth 4 and a Servant-Housekeeper living at 2 Stewart St. Govan. I'm trying to figure out why she wasn't living with the family, or maybe none of the children were at that time but were then with their Dad come Census time. My first thought was that being an infant she may have been staying with family but I don't know how to find that out, yet.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks
Jacquie

Hi Jacquie,

The census place that the LDS CDs refer to is the civil parish, which for this area was Govan. But the Registration Districts which were used by the General Register Office for Scotland broke it down into smaller areas - registration districts. In 1881 646/2 was Partick registration district (within the civil parish of Govan).

All the best,

AndrewP

Jacquie,

The valuation rolls put it in the Parish of Govan, but the Rating Area is given as Partick, so it really does fit.

At the time of the 1881 census, these were the ten households at 31 Cross St., Govan (Partick).

Robertson, plus nephew Allan
Guthrie
Hay, plus lodger Dingwall
Paterson
Whitestone
Smith
Elliot
Cowie
Jones, plus lodgers Reid
Thomson, plus nephew Quale

Do any of these names show up in your research, close to Elizabeth and Jane Fraser?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi,
Thanks for the clarification on Partick and Govan. I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm doing further research.
None of the names at 31 Cross St in 1881 match any that I've found so far.
Elizabeth Fraser may have had 2 sisters, Marjory and Jane. Jane signed her death cert in February, Marjory her wedding cert. So I guess I'm off to see if any of them married.
Thanks again for the help
Jacquie

Hello Jacquie,

I had a quick check of surnames for the married ladies living at 31 Cross Street in 1881 but I couldn't find one with a maiden name Ross.

Regards,
Annette M
