Detaching part of Tree to send as gedcom attach. on email

Post by Lorna Allison » Thu Jan 11, 2007 2:28 pm

Hi

I had a eureka moment when I discovered a 4th cousin on GenesR. He sent me his part of the family and I want to do the same. Unfortunately I have my whole tree on the one file and I only want to send him the bit he is interested in.

Can anyone tell me how to detach this bit from a FTM file and turn it into a gedcom? I am wearied looking up the book and trying to get some help through FTM and feeling such an idiot.

Any help SO gratefully received.

Hi Lorna,

Click on File
Export - Selected individuals

A dialogue window will open for you to choose the name from.

Clear the "Number Included" list first by clicking the << button
In the list of names on the left, select the name of the person whose ancestory you want to create and click the "Ancestors" button, (If you want, and there are any, you can also include the Descendants of that person by also clicking on the "Descendants" button. If you do use it you will probably get a message saying an individual has already been selected. Ignor it. It is the main name it is referring to).

Click OK

You will be asked for a file name. I use the main persons name.

To check it has worked OK, click File, Open and open the new file. Voila!

Hi Mary

Thank you so very much. Worked like a dream. There was me thinking "select individual" would mean I had to work through the list one person at a time

I have sent off the tree and am on the way to a lovely family history relationship ie. "Would you like a copy of two 17C wills I have". Joy!

Once again, grateful thanks.

You are very welcome Lorna.

Have to say I only found out how to do it by playing around a bit. Like you, I initially thought I had to select person by person. "More trouble than it's worth" thought I, then I clicked on the ancestors button to see what would happen.

There were a few [woohoo] 's when I discovered that function

I use it now if I am starting to get a lot of info on a previously "thin" line. It means that I can work on that one exclusively and then merge it back into the main file.

Thank you from me too, Mary =D> - I'm likely to have to do just that for some newly discovered 4th cousins & was thinking what a chore it would be. :D

With Stewarts and MacDonalds in my lines, all seeming to use the same first names, it became a really useful feature.

Nothing worse than getting three generations back only to discover you've put them in the wrong George or Donald's ancestry [comp-hammer]
