Scottish girl adopted and taken to Canada, how do I trace...

Post by the pretender » Thu Jan 18, 2007 12:32 pm

I am looking to trace a Scots girl Muriel who was adopted by my grandfathers sister Isabella (Bell) Stewart and her husband Peter Campbell (which would be the name used in the adoption) in probably Edinburgh, definitely Scotland and taken to Canada between the wars, probably just after WW1 going by my gt aunts age. Bell was resident in Canada when she came across to adopt Muriel and take her back.
Other than the last known address for Bell was Kingston, Ontario prob around the 1960's this is all the info I have, Muriel need not have started life in Ontario, she is probably now passed on but would like to trace her adoption here in Scotland and then possibly her children.
Anyone have any ideas on how to trace her adoption in Scotland, or entry to Canada ?

Formal legal records for adoption only started in Scotland in 1930, when a Sheriff Court process was introduced.

However, sadly, it only the adoptee who has the right to access such records (or someone on trheri authority), held at National Archives of Scotland.

Prior to 1930, there might be some institutional records if the child was adopted from an orphanage.

Do you know the birth name and date of birth?

See also http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/020110_e.html which could be of help ........

Hi
Do you know the birth name and date of birth?
It would be better if the date of birth is after 1906, not to post the information publicly on the forum. Although it is a long time ago, the person may still be alive.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks for trying David but looks like this one is dead in the water.

You may find further information

1925-1935 online database

Unfortunately, they will not be listed in the naturalization records because they were British subjects. There will be a record of Isabella's entry with Peter and then her return with Muriel.
