BAILLIE CLAN ?.....

Post by Baillie 1799 » Sat Jan 27, 2007 12:45 am

To my knowledge there is not a Baillie Clan. But would the Baillie name by chance be generally associated with a particular clan?

Especially around the 1700's?
Been researching for a short while but having much trouble making that first decendant find that is somewhere in the Highlands.

Hi

according to www.electricscotland.com there is a clan baillie, perhaps if you go to the website and go to the clan section there may be more history about the clan, or it may recommend other sites which will give you a bit of history

hope this helps

Baillie Clan

Post by Rachel » Fri Feb 23, 2007 4:10 pm

:D Sorry I am late getting back to you but have had connection problems. There is indeed a Baillie clan there is also a Baillie tartan. They are not highlanders more lowlanders probably cattle rustlers in the days gone by i.e border reevers. Some have done well for themelves however and more can be known about them from Black's Scottish surnames. I am a Baillie on my mothers side. If I can help you further let me know.

Thanks for the reply Rachel,

That might explain a little about why the main Baillie (William) did not come to the US with his wife and chidlren. He may have either been inprisoned or died possibly by hanging, or in the military. This is an enormous blackhole I am trying to fill in our family line. We do not know anything about William Baillie or the rest of his family in Scotland, who they are or where they are from except in the HIghlands. It is documented in church records here in the States where we settled around 1807 that the Baillie's were devoted Presbyterians and from the Highlands. That in itself is a very broad area.

But with what you mentioned about most Baillie's being in the Lowlands, that should narrow my search some I would think. There was also a suggestion from Sarah that William Baillie was in the Military that would take him from his family in the Lowlands to the Highlands where he was possibly serving in the Military.

1. Would you have any suggestions where I could search for WIlliam Baillie, not knowing his birth date, death date, marriage date?
I do know his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown) and children; Alexander born 1799 and Daniel born 1800 but known where. Margaret, Alexander and Daniel are all buried in Columbiana County, Ohio.

2. Is there a way to contact Clan Baillie directly for genealogy direction and help? Or another group that might be proficient in the Baillie name for help?

Very good to hear from you, thanks.
Dave

P.S. - I am waiting on word form the Columbiana COunty Historical Group on copies of wills and naturalization records that might help with some of the origins of Margaret, Alexander and Daniel. It has been suggested that Margaret's maiden name was Ross. I researched a William Baillie that married a margaret Ross in Inverness(I forget the year now). But, that William Baillie died in 1805. Might be the one in the same, but I can't find the childrens names of that Willaim and Margaret.

About your Baillie Line, Rachel.

Probably a long shot, but would your Baillie line possibly have three brothers born around 1770's named William, John and George Baillie?

Parent's unknown.

Thanks, Dave

Baillie Clan

Post by Rachel » Sat Feb 24, 2007 10:17 am

:D Hi Baillie 1799. It is not easy trying to track down any Baillie there are literally thousands of them. I have positive connections with John and George also Charles but have no direct link to a William. I have hit on several Williams' in my searches but have not been able to prove any of them were mine. I am afraid I have confined quite a number to my archives, but give me a few days I will dig them out and see if any will be of a help to you. I also had communication from an association of clans where I got my information from I will dig that out too and let you have what I know of the Baillie's in general.
good hunting

I may have misled you just a little about the William Baillie that married a Margaret Ross in Inverness and he died in 1805.

I'm not sure yet if he is really the one I have been looking for for a very long time now. But if he is . . . His full name was James William Baillie.

That too could be another reason why he has been so difficult to find if "William" really was his middle name.

Any suggestions on where to look for Margaret (Ross) and James William Baillie's children? I didn't find anything on Scotland People

Thanks for the helpw ith the Baillie stuff,
Dave

Baillie clan

I am not surprised you are confused all mine were difficult to pin down. I have found a James Baillie married a Margaret Ross in Ayr in1779. James birth was given abt 1754 Gilminscroft, Ayr. That is a Lowland town. I also found Alexander Baillie born 1799 Moy and Dalrossie Inverness(Highland) He married a Margaret Noble in 1824. He died 1878 and Margaret died 1839. Found a Daniel Baillie born 1800 Irvine Ayr father James, mother Margaret Cook. I don't know if any of this is any use to you but you may be able to find a connection. I suggest you try LDS at www.familysearch.org where you will also find details of Baillie's buried in Columbia Ohio.
Some years ago I had information from www.scotlandclans.com. I have tried them on your behalf but they do not offer the same facilities. You may however try them and go for the tartans where you may enjoy viewing the different Baillie tartans they have to show.
I am still searching for some of my family and if any of yours drop in the sack I will let you know.
good luck rachel
