Stuck in time?

Post by Thrall » Sat Jan 27, 2007 4:10 pm

Hi All, I have a slightly unusual problem, the clock in my computer was inadvertently moved forward to July 2007 from January 2007 a few days ago. I only discovered this when trying to buy a plane ticket online yesterday. I put it "right", but now it seems I will have to wait till July to look at any new posts on TS. A restart changed nothing.

Any tips? Perhaps a duplicate PM would be helpful if replying, so that I can see any answers.......... :?

Thank you,

Thrall (slightly out of touch)

I will have a look in the TS back shop and see if that can be doctored.

All the best,

Andrew

Hi Thrall & Andrew:

I changed my PC calendar date to July 27, 2007 and returned to TS. I'm not experiencing any problem viewing today's postings.

Has the change to the date on your PC stayed at January after a restart?

Recently, I was having trouble with my PC accepting and keeping a new home page. The home page would revert to the original with every restart.

I went to the top left hand corner, clicked FILE - WORKOFFLINE - made and saved the changes. On re-booting the change had finally taken.

Just a thought,

I'm not sure that the date and/or time on your PC would change whether or not you would get to see new posts.

If it's set up the way I think it is, it is based on the difference between the last time you logged in/out of TS and the time a new forum post was added, but only on the forum servers. They should not be able to "see" the time or date on your PC.

Hi Thrall,

I have checked in the TS backshop, and I can tell you that your timestamp is today's date, definitely no date in July or any other future date.

I would suggest that you clear your cookies, or at least the TalkingScot cookie (if you can find it amongst your Temporary Internet Files on your PC). The problem may well lie in there.

All the best,

Andrew

I have now got through and can check new posts using another browser, Opera, so it´s something in IE that needs sorting.

Frances, yes the calendar is still correct after restart.

Andrew, thank you for checking, I will now try to tip out some cookies.

Thanks for the help,

Thrall

Hi Thrall,

You may have Internet Explorer always set up to show the most recent page from each site you visit. If it checks the timestamp of the page on the web against the one on your hard disk (dated July 2007), then for the next 6 months, the one on your hard disk will be the newest. So, clearing out your temporary internet files may do the job.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew, all temporary internet files erased. No change! Looks like I´ll wait until one balmy summer day when all will be well again...... :D

Thanks anyway,

Thrall

Thrall, are you the only one who uses that PC or do you have to login at all?

Only a wild thought, but if you are not logged in with admin privileges the PC might let you change the visible time for during your session without actually changing the computer's time.

Who inadvertantly changed the date and time in the first place? If it was someone who logs in to a different account than you, they might need to be the one who changes the setting to the correct one.

How about, as a last resort, a System Restore to a date just before the clock was changed? Do a bit of time travel...backwards!

Best wishes
