John Galloway & Agnes Young (Strathaven)

Post by frances » Mon Jan 29, 2007 9:35 am

Have managed to find the birth certificate of John Young 18th April 1793 and his marriage certificate to Agnes Young 9th October 1819.

His BC gives his father as Andrew Galloway (day labourer in Strathaven) -no mother mentioned.

His MC 9th October 1819 no other detals.

I would love to find John's fathers detais but have hit a brick wall.

Anyone any ideas ? :(

Still looking for Agnes's birth-from the census it looks like she was born c 1801 in Argyleshire.

Thanks for any help.

Frances :D

Hi Frances,

Have you tried to search genealogy boards, such as, rootsweb or worldconnect for John Young? Possibility someone else is reaching the same family? Another suggestion would be to post a message on these boards or Ancestry and maybe some will contact you? It took two years for someone to spot my family, but it was well worth the wait! Oh and my family just so happens to make many trips to the Mitchell and NRH. Sorry, I didn't mean to brag.

Regards
Marilyn

Hello Marilyn.

Thanks for the reply. I will give your suggestions a try.

A few months ago I was contacted by someone who had seen my posting (made some three years previously) on the Tain community website. It turns out that he and my husband share a great great grandfather so I do know that you should never give up hope. My husband and his cousin are now in regular contact and are hoping to meet up in person soon.Looks like a whole new branch of the family tree to be added :D .

Thanks again

Kind Regards

A very tired Frances after being out witth the family last night celebrating the 60th birthday of my sister and the birth of a new great nephew (Nathan Jay Burns).

Hi Frances,

Like you I am researching my family who are Youngs. Most of mine are from Hamilton, Lanarkshire but some have emerged from Edinburgh and further afield. Also I have Burns in my family too, they are from McGrory's and Boyle's and Young families from Fife, and Berwick.

With the name being so common it becomes difficult sometimes to narrow them down, I myself have hit the proverbial brick wall :x
Callaghan or Callahan & Callachan - Blantyre & Ireland. Polockus -(many variations) Blantyre, Bellshill & Lithuania, Worldwide. Young and Boyle - Hamilton and Fife also Ireland. O'Donnell from Hamilton and Ireland Hastie from Fife also Burns from Fife

Hello

Thanks for the reply. It is awful when you hit a brick wall. I find that it is better to move on and come back later on. You never know what will turn up further down the line. We were at my mother in laws on Sunday and she produced a letter from relations in Canada, (the wife of my husbands great grandfathers brother :? ) seems that they have been in touch for a while and never thought to mention it. Another branch of the family (MacRae) opening up I think .

Good luck with the search :)

Kind Regards

Frances

You never mentioned if you'd found a DC for John Galloway.

I'm probably being wildly optimistic here, but, on the off chance that John survived beyond 1855, I searched for DC's (anywhere) for his name born 1793 +/- 3 years.

There are four. They might be worth a look if you've not looked at them already, especially the last one? maybe?.

1858 GALLOWAY JOHN (Mother's m.s. SMELLOM) M 68 THURSO /CAITHNESS 041/00 0044
1868 GALLOWAY JOHN M 78 COLMONELL /AYR 582/00 0012
1877 GALLOWAY JOHN M 82 ARDROSSAN OLD /AYR 576/01 0005
1881 GALLOWAY JOHN M 86 WHITBURN /WEST LOTHIAN 673/01 0003

Sorry about that Frances. Still, sometimes wild optimism does pay off, albeit rarely.
